Description

This section describes various Nutrients and other substances that may lower Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.

These Substances may Lower Blood Pressure in Hypertension Patients

Alkaloids

Berberine may lower elevated Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.  [1]

Betaine (especially the Trimethylglycine (TMG) form of Betaine) may lower diastolic Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.  [2]

Capsaicin may reduce systolic Blood Pressure.  [3]

Rynchophylline (an Oxindole Alkaloid present in Cat’s Claw) may lower Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.

Amino Acids

Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC) may lower Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.  [4]

Arginine (6,000 mg per day) may lower Blood Pressure in some Hypertension patients (by facilitating the body's production of Nitric Oxide (NO) and by inhibiting the Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE)).  [5]

Amino Acids - Branched Chain (BCAAs) have been speculated to help prevent Hypertension.

Carnitine may lower Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.  [6]

Citrulline may help to prevent Hypertension (including Pulmonary Hypertension).  [7]

Ethylene-Diamine-Tetra-Acetate (EDTA) - the synthetic Amino Acid used in Chelation Therapy - may lower Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.  [8]

Glycine may lower Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.  [9]

Histidine may lower elevated Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients (by its influence on the Autonomic Nervous System).

N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) may help to prevent and reverse Alcohol-induced Hypertension (by detoxifying Acetaldehyde).  [10]

Taurine (6,000 mg per day) may lower elevated Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients (by suppressing Renin-Angiotensin) - it usually requires four weeks of daily supplementation with Taurine before its Blood Pressure-lowering effects become apparent.  [11]

Theanine may lower Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.  [12]

Tryptophan may lower Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.  [13]

Carbohydrates

Chitosan (5,000 mg per day) may lower Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients (probably by lowering elevated Chloride levels).  [14]

Increased consumption of Dietary Fiber (especially Soluble Fiber) may lower Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients:.  [15]

Guar Gum may lower Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.  [16]

Psyllium may inhibit the ability of excessive Sodium to cause Hypertension (by reducing the absorption of dietary Sodium).  [17]

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) may lower elevated Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.  [18]

Lentinan may lower Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.  [19]

Carotenoids

Astaxanthin may lower Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.  [20]

Lycopene may lower elevated Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.  [21]

Coumarins

3-n-Butyl-Phthalide may lower Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients by 12% - 14%.  [22]

Enzymes

Nattokinase may lower elevated Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.  [23]

Lack of Telomerase activity may cause Hypertension.  [24]

Glycosides

It has been speculated that Laetrile may lower Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.

Hormones

Estriol may lower Blood Pressure and may therefore be useful for the treatment of Hypertension in postmenopausal women.  [25]

Supplemental Melatonin may lower Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.  [26]

Insufficient production of endogenous Testosterone may cause Hypertension (especially in males) - during Testosterone deficiency Arteries become more fibrous and stiff, and less elastic.  [27]

Electromagnetic Radiation

Atmospheric Ions - Negative may reduce Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.  [28]

Exposure to Sunlight (in moderation) may help to reduce Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.  [29]

Lignans

Sesamin may lower elevated Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.  [30]

Lipids

Forskolin (a Diterpene found in Coleus) may lower (both systolic and diastolic) Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients (by causing dilation of the Blood Vessels).  [31]

Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA) may reduce Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.  [32]

Ganoderic Acid (a Triterpenic Acid present in Reishi Mushrooms) may lower Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.

Ginsenoside Rb1 (a constituent of American Ginseng and Korean Ginseng) may help to lower Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients.

Optimal levels of High Density Lipoproteins may help to prevent Hypertension.  [33]

Monounsaturated Fatty Acids may help to prevent Hypertension (by lowering Blood Pressure) – this effect only occurs with moderate intake of Monounsaturated Fatty Acids:  if consumption of total Fatty Acids exceeds 37% of Energy intake, the favourable effect of Monounsaturated Fatty Acids on Blood Pressure no longer occurs.  [34]
