Taurine
Overview
Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid that is not deemed essential for the body. It operates independently and is not incorporated into proteins. The liver naturally synthesizes taurine from cysteine and methionine.

Taurine may Enhance the Function of these Substances
Bile Salts
Taurine is essential to Bile (as the Bile Salt - Sodium Taurocholate). [1]
Enzymes
Taurine activates Aldehyde Dehydrogenase. [2]
Taurine may increase the production/activity of Glutamate Decarboxylase. [3]
Taurine may counteract the ability of Homocysteine to reduce (extracellular) Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) levels. [4]
Hormones
Taurine may stimulate the production of Human Growth Hormone (HGH). [5]
Taurine may potentiate the effects of Insulin. [6]
Lipids
Taurine may facilitate the synthesis of Ceramides in the Skin. [7]
Minerals
Taurine facilitates the transport of some minerals into and out of the body's Cells, including:
Potassium [8]
Sodium [9]
Neurotransmitters
Taurine may increase Acetylcholine levels within the Hippocampus. [10]
Taurine may increase Gamma Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) (GABA) levels in the Brain. [11]
Taurine may increase Histamine levels within the Hippocampus. [12]
Peptides
Taurine may increase platelet Glutathione levels. [13]
Patented Medicines
Taurine may enhance the anti-cancer effects of Cyclophosphamide. [14]
Taurine may enhance the effectiveness of Doxorubicin. [15]
Proteins
Taurine may inhibit Fructose's ability to initiate the Cross-Linking of Collagen. [16]
Second Messengers
Taurine modulates the activity of Cyclic AMP (cAMP) in the Cardiac Muscle. [17]
Vitamins
Taurine may facilitate the digestion of Vitamins - Fat-Soluble due to its essential component of Bile in the Bile Salt -Sodium Taurocholate - which is necessary for digesting Fat-Soluble Vitamins.
Taurine may counteract these Potentially Toxic Substances
Aldehydes
Taurine may reduce the toxicity of Acetaldehyde. This effect occurs because Taurine activates the Aldehyde Dehydrogenase enzyme, which accelerates the clearance of Acetaldehyde from the body. Studies have shown that Taurine inhibits the rise in plasma Acetaldehyde levels that generally result from Alcohol consumption. [18]
Amino Acids
Taurine may inhibit Glutamic Acid's ability to damage Neurons. [19]
Taurine may counteract the ability of Homocysteine to reduce (extracellular) Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) levels, Taurine may inhibit Homocysteine-induced damage to the Heart, and Taurine may lower elevated Homocysteine levels. [20]
Carbohydrates
Taurine may inhibit Fructose's ability to initiate Cross-Linking. [21]
Electromagnetic Radiation
Taurine (2,000 mg per day) may help counteract the severe depletion of serum Taurine due to Radiation Therapy. [22]
Environmental Toxins
Taurine may reduce the Liver damage caused by Carbon Tetrachloride. [23]
Gases
Taurine may protect against the toxic effects of Ozone and may prevent Ozone-induced damage to the Lungs. [24]
