Description

Mercury is a fat-soluble Toxic Heavy Metal.

Chemical Symbol:  Hg

Toxic Effects of Excess Mercury

Mercury is considered to be the most toxic non-radioactive Heavy Metal.

Cardiovascular System

Excessive ingestion of Mercury may cause Angina.

Elevated Mercury levels may increase the risk of Atherosclerosis.  [1]

Elevated Mercury levels may increase the risk of Heart Attack.  [2]

 Mercury may cause Hypertension.  [3]

Ears/Hearing

Mercury toxicity may be an underlying cause of Deafness.  [4]

Mercury toxicity may be an underlying cause of Tinnitus.  [5]

Excretory System

Mercury accumulates in the Kidneys and may damage the Kidneys.  [6]

Immune System

Mercury toxicity may be an underlying cause of Autoimmune Diseases.  [7]

Mercury may weaken the Immune System by interfering with the balance of Helper T-Cells subpopulations:

Mercury may inhibit the activity of TH1 Helper T-Cells.  [8]

Mercury may stimulate the overactivity activity of TH2 Helper T-Cells.  [9]

Excessive exposure to Mercury may cause Hodgkin's Disease (a form of Lymphatic Cancer).

Metabolism

Exposure to Mercury (or its vapors) may cause Fatigue.  [10]

Mercury may stimulate the production of Free Radicals.  [11]

Mercury may accumulate in and damage the Liver.

Musculoskeletal System

Mercury may increase the risk of Arthritis.

Exposure to Mercury may cause Muscle Tension.  [12]

Exposure to Mercury may cause Muscle Weakness.  [13]

Nervous System

Exposure to Mercury may cause impairment in Abstract Reasoning ability.  [14]

Exposure to Mercury may cause Aggressiveness.  [15]

Mercury accumulation in the Brain may be one of the primary causes of Alzheimer’s Disease.  [16]

Exposure to Mercury may cause Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).  [17]

Exposure to Mercury may cause Anxiety.  [18]

Exposure to Mercury may cause Apathy.  [19]

 Mercury may damage Astrocytes.  [20]

Exposure to Mercury may cause decreased Attention Span.  [21]

Mercury exposure during infanthood may increase the risk of Autism:  [22]

Three month-old babies exposed to as little as 63 micrograms of Mercury (a common constituent of Vaccines in its Ethyl Mercury form) are 2½ times more likely to develop Autism.

Mercury concentrates in the Brain and may damage the Brain:

Mercury may damage the Blood-Brain Barrier.

Mercury concentrates the Cerebral Cortex and may damage the Cerebral Cortex.

Exposure to Mercury may cause impairment of Concentration.  [23]

Exposure to Mercury may cause impaired Coordination ability.  [24]

Exposure to Mercury may cause Depression.  [25]

Exposure to Mercury may cause Drowsiness.

        Mercury may cause Epilepsy.

Exposure to Mercury may cause Hallucinations.  [26]

Exposure to Mercury (or its vapors) may cause Headache.  [27]

Exposure to Mercury (or its vapors) may cause Insomnia.  [28]

Exposure to Mercury can lower Intelligence.  [29]

Exposure to Mercury (or its vapors) may cause Irritability.  [30]

Exposure to Mercury may cause impairment of Learning ability.  [31]

Exposure to Mercury (or its vapors) may cause Memory impairment.  [32]

Mental Retardation may occur as a result of excessive exposure to Mercury.  [33]

Exposure to Mercury may be associated with poor (“bad”) Mood.  [34]

Mercury may cause Multiple Sclerosis (MS).  [35]

Mercury may cause the Apoptosis (cellular death) of Neurons:  [36]

Mercury may severely disrupt the structural integrity of Microtubules (by interfering with Tubulin).  [37]

Exposure to Mercury may cause Nervousness.  [38]

 Mercury may cause Numbness.  [39]

Exposure to Mercury may cause Paralysis.  [40]

Exposure to Mercury may cause Speech Impairment (in the form of slurred Speech).  [41]

Exposure to Mercury may cause Tremor.  [42]

Respiratory System

Mercury concentrates in the Lungs and may damage the Lungs.

Sexual System

Exposure to Mercury during Pregnancy may increase the risk of Birth Defects.

Long-term exposure to Mercury may cause Female Infertility.  [43]

Long-term exposure to Mercury may cause Male Infertility.  [44]

Exposure to Mercury may cause Miscarriage.  [45]

Skin

Mercury toxicity may be an underlying cause of Dermatitis.  [46]

Environmental Sources of Mercury

Amalgam Dental Fillings contain 46% to 56% (elemental metallic) Mercury:  [47]

One (large) Amalgam Dental Filling can contain up to 750 mg of (elemental metallic) Mercury.

A vapor containing the Mercury component of Amalgam Dental Fillings “leaches out” during a persons’ lifetime and because of this “leaching” there is concern as to the quantity of Mercury that a person with Amalgam Dental Fillings may be exposed to over the course of their lifetime.  It has been estimated that (depending on the number of fillings a Mouth contains), an individual may be exposed to 10 - 100 micrograms of Mercury each day from their Amalgam Dental Fillings.
