Overview

Methionine is an essential, glucogenic, sulfur-containing amino acid and used within the body to make proteins.

Health Benefits of Methionine

Cells

Methionine may help to prevent Neural Tube Defects in offspring.  [1]

Detoxification

Methionine may reduce the severity of Hangovers especially when used in combination with Alanine.  Methionine has been demonstrated to lower circulating levels of Acetaldehyde after the ingestion of Alcohol.  [2]

Digestive System

Methionine may accelerate the healing of Ulcers - Duodenal.  [3]

Methionine may help to prevent Gallstones.  [4]

Methionine may be useful for the prevention and treatment of (chronic) Pancreatitis due to its Antioxidant properties which protect the Pancreas from the excessive generation of Free Radicals that are speculated to cause Pancreatitis.  [5]

Eyes/Vision

Methionine deficiency may cause Cataracts and Methionine supplementation helps to prevent the development of Cataracts.  Anecdotal Evidence

Hair

Methionine (ingested orally) may improve Hair Condition.  [6]

Methionine in a topical form applied to the scalp may facilitate hair growth in persons afflicted with Male Pattern Baldness:  Anecdotal Evidence

In one study, a cream containing Biotin and Vitamin B3 applied topically at night and used in conjunction with a shampoo containing Cystine, Cysteine and Methionine caused Hair regrowth in 75% of Male Pattern Baldness subjects.

Immune System

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) patients are often found to have low levels of Methionine and supplemental Methionine (6,000 mg per day) may improve Memory in AIDS patients with Dementia.  [7]

Methionine may alleviate some types of Allergies by inhibiting the release of Histamine.

Methionine may be an essential component of many Antibodies.

Metabolism

Methionine functions as an Antioxidants (after its conversion within the body to Cysteine).

Methionine may be helpful for relieving and preventing Fatigue.

Musculoskeletal System

Methionine may alleviate Muscle Weakness.  [8]

Nails

Methionine may help to strengthen the Nails (due to the Sulfur content of Methionine).  [9]

Nervous System

Methionine may alleviate Depression when the cause of Depression is excess Histamine (via Methionine’s ability to detoxify excessive Histamine).  [10]

Methionine may be useful for Down's Syndrome patients.  [11]

Methionine may help to alleviate Pain (by facilitating the manufacture of Endorphins).  [12]

Methionine (up to 5,000 mg per day) may alleviate many of the symptoms of Parkinson's Disease.  [13]

Methionine may alleviate Schizophrenia (where Schizophrenia is due to excessive Histamine levels).  [14]

Skin

Methionine is essential for the growth of the Skin and improves the tone and elasticity of the Skin (due to the Sulfur content of Methionine).  [15]

Amino Acids

Methionine is essential for the conversion of Lysine to Carnitine (and Methionine is a component of the Carnitine molecule).

Methionine facilitates the endogenous production of Creatine (it “donates” its Methyl Group to the Creatine molecule).  [16]
