Down's Syndrome

Also known as:  Mongolism;  Trisomic Mongolism;  Trisomy 21

Down’s Syndrome is a Mental ailment due to a Chromosome defect limiting the sufferer’s maximum possible IQ to 50 - 60.

 Down's Syndrome occurs in approximately 1 out of every 700 (live) births and the incidence varies according to the age of the mother (in early child-bearing years the incidence is approximately 1 in 2,000 births -  in mothers above the age of 40, the incidence rises to approximately 45 in 1,000 births).

Alkaloids

 Betaine may improve the behavior and Mental Function of children afflicted with Down’s Syndrome (this improvement is due to Betaine functioning as a Methyl Donor in the SAM Cycle). 

Amino Acids

 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) [1 mg per kg of bodyweight] may be a valuable adjutant therapy for Down’s Syndrome. 

 Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC) (2 mg per kg of bodyweight) may improve Attention Span and Visual Memory in Down’s Syndrome patients.  ^[1]

 Supplemental Alpha-Ketoglutarate (AKG) may improve the status of the Connective Tissue, Joints and Ligaments of children afflicted with Down’s Syndrome.  ^[2]

 Methionine supplementation may be useful for Down’s Syndrome patients.  ^[3]

 Down’s Syndrome patients often exhibit depleted Serine levels (this depletion of Serine in Down’s Syndrome children occurs as a result of all available Serine being utilized as a cofactor for the over-expressed Cystathionine ß-Synthase enzyme). 

 Children afflicted with Down’s Syndrome frequently exhibit low serum Tryptophan levels. 

Lipids

 Phosphatidylcholine (1,000 mg per day) may improve mental performance in Down’s Syndrome patients.  ^[4]
