Overview

Folic Acid, Folate, is a water-soluble B vitamin that is essential for normal cell growth and cell division. Folic acid deficiency has been linked to a number of diseases, including birth defects, heart disease, and certain types of cancer.
Folic acid's structure contains Pteridine, PABA, and Glutamic Acid.

Folate is found naturally in a wide variety of foods, with spinach, liver, yeast, asparagus, and Brussels sprouts among the highest sources.

Folic Acid may counteract these Potentially Toxic Substances

Alcohols

Folic Acid may reduce the toxicity of Methanol. Degradation of Formic Acid (Methanol’s ultimate metabolic end-product) is dependent on adequate Folic Acid. People deficient in Folic Acid may experience more severe symptoms of Methanol toxicity due to increased accumulation of Formic Acid in the body.

Amino Acids

Folic Acid counteracts the toxicity of Glutamic Acid. [1]

Supplemental Folic Acid, 400 - 5,000 mcg per day, lowers elevated Homocysteine a substance strongly implicated in various Cardiovascular Diseases, by approximately 25%:

Folic Acid in its Methyl Tetrahydrofolate form is required for the conversion of Homocysteine to Methionine

Electromagnetic Radiation

Folic Acid may inhibit the ability of Gamma-Rays to damage Chromosomes.

Enzymes

Folic Acid may inhibit the activity of HMG-CoA Reductase. [2]

Folic Acid inhibits the excessive activity of Ornithine Decarboxylase in the Colon. [3]

Folic Acid inhibits the potentially toxic Xanthine Oxidase enzyme. [4]

Immune System Chemicals

Folic Acid may lower elevated Interleukin 8 (IL-8) levels.

Lipids

The degradation of Formic Acid is dependent on adequate Folic Acid. Persons who are deficient in Folic Acid may experience more severe symptoms of Formic Acid toxicity due to increased accumulation of Formic Acid in the body.  Folic Acid accelerates the conversion of Formic Acid to Carbon Dioxide.
