Also known as:  Gamma Radiation;  Gamma Irradiation

Description

Gamma-Rays are a spectrum of Electromagnetic Radiation with a very short wavelength - Gamma-Rays have a shorter wavelength than X-Rays but a longer wavelength than Cosmic Rays.  Gamma-Rays are also classed as a form of Radioactivity (Ionizing Radiation).

Toxic Effects of Gamma-Rays

Cells

Excessive exposure to Gamma-Rays may cause Cell mutations:

Excessive exposure to Gamma-Rays may damage Chromosomes.

Digestive System

 Gamma-Rays may destroy the Villi.

Hair

Excessive exposure to Gamma-Rays may cause the death (Apoptosis) of Hair Follicles.

Immune System

Excessive exposure to Gamma-Rays may cause various types of Cancer.

Exposure to Gamma-Rays may cause atrophy (shrinkage) of the Spleen.

Exposure to Gamma-Rays may cause atrophy (shrinkage) of the Thymus.

Exposure to Gamma-Rays may destroy White Blood Cells:

Exposure to Gamma-Rays may cause a reduction in the body’s production of Helper T-Cells.

Exposure to Gamma-Rays may cause a reduction in the body’s production of Suppressor T-Cells.

Metabolism

Exposure to Gamma-Rays may result in the generation of Hydroxyl Free Radicals.  [1]

Exposure to Gamma-Rays may damage the Liver.

Nervous System

Exposure of the Brain to Gamma-Rays may damage the Hippocampus.

Skin

Exposure of the Skin to Gamma-Rays may cause Radiodermatitis (a form of Dermatitis).

Exposure to excessive amounts of Gamma-Rays may cause Radioepithelitis (i.e. destruction of the especially of the Skin).

These Substances may Counteract the Toxic Effects of Gamma-Rays

Amino Acids

Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC) may counteract the toxic effects of exposure to Gamma-Rays.  [2]

N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) may protect the body from the toxic effects of Gamma-Rays.  [3]

Carbohydrates

Beta 1,3 Glucan may protect the body from the toxic effects of Gamma-Rays.  [4]

Hyaluronic Acid (cream applied topically) may counteract the ability of Gamma-Rays to cause Radioepithelitis.

Carotenoids

Lycopene may minimize the cellular damage caused by exposure to Gamma-Rays.  [5]

Hormones

Melatonin (pretreatment) may counteract the toxicity associated with exposure to Gamma-Rays.  [6]

Lipids

Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) may inhibit the ability of Gamma-Rays to damage the Hippocampus.  [7]

Gamma-Linolenic Acid may inhibit the ability of Gamma-Rays to cause genetic damage.  [8]
