N-Acetyl-Cysteine
Overview
N-Acetyl-Cysteine, NAC, is an endogenous form of Cysteine produced from Cysteine within the body and also widely regarded as the preferred and more effective form of Cysteine for supplementation.
N-Acetyl-Cysteine may Enhance the Function of these Substances
Amino Acids
NAC increases intracellular Cysteine levels (this intracellular Cysteine is then incorporated into Glutathione) - NAC “reduces” Cystine to form Cysteine. [1]
NAC may prevent the destruction of Glutathione by preventing the oxidation of Glutathione. [2]
Enzymes
NAC may enhance the activity of Glutathione-S-Transferase. [3]
Immune System Chemicals
NAC may enhance the ability of Interleukin 2 (IL-2) to counteract Cancer. [4]
Nucleic Compounds
NAC may help to protect the body’s endogenous Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) from damage. [5]
Patented Medicines
NAC may increase the effectiveness of Clomiphene. [6]
NAC may enhance the effectiveness of exogenous (pharmaceutical) Interferon Alpha in the treatment of Hepatitis C. [7]
NAC may enhance the effectiveness of Oseltamivir for the treatment of Influenza. [8]
NAC may increase the effectiveness of Ribavirin. [9]
N-Acetyl-Cysteine may inhibit these Potentially Toxic Substances
Alcohols
NAC may reduce the toxicity of Methanol in the Brain. [10]
Aldehydes
NAC binds to Acetaldehyde and may reduce the toxicity of Acetaldehyde. [11]
NAC may reduce the ability of Acrolein to suppress the Immune System. [12]
Amino Acids
NAC may inhibit the excitotoxic effects of Glutamic Acid. [13]
NAC may lower elevated Homocysteine levels. [14]
Carbohydrates
NAC may inhibit the ability of Fructose to increase Blood Pressure and cause Insulin Resistance. [15]
N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) may help to prevent many of the toxic effects associated with Sucrose (including Obesity, increased Triglycerides, increased Blood Sugar, and increased Cholesterol). [16]
Electromagnetic Radiation
NAC may inhibit the ability of Ultra-Violet Radiation to activate Elastase and may hinder the ability of UV to damage the body’s Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA). [17]
NAC may inhibit the ability of UV-A to damage the body’s Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA). [18]
NAC may inhibit the ability of UV-B to damage the body’s Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA). [19]
NAC may protect the body from the toxic effects of exposure to Gamma-Rays. [20]
Environmental Toxins
NAC may counteract the toxicity of Chloroform. [21]
Enzymes
NAC may inhibit the ability of Ultra-Violet Radiation to activate Elastase. [22]
NAC may inhibit the activity of Ornithine Decarboxylase. [23]
Immune System Chemicals
NAC may lower elevated Interleukin 1 levels.
NAC may lower elevated Interleukin 6 levels.
NAC may retard the ability of Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) to inhibit the maturation of Oligodendroglia and may lower elevated TNF levels. [24]
