Overview

Hydrogen Peroxide is the most common form of Peroxide.  It is often regarded as a type of Free Radical - but is not a true Free Radical but an incompletely reduced form of molecular Oxygen.  Physically, Hydrogen Peroxide is a colorless liquid.

Biological Functions and Health Benefits of Hydrogen Peroxide

Cardiovascular System

Hydrogen Peroxide used as an Oxygen Therapy has been successful in the treatment of Gangrene of the fingers and toes.  Anecdotal Evidence

Complementary Therapies

Hydrogen Peroxide is utilized for therapeutic purposes in Oxygen Therapy - it supplies the body with additional Oxygen.

Ears/Hearing

Hydrogen Peroxide instilled into the Ears may help to prevent Otitis.  [1]

Hormones

Hydrogen Peroxide is necessary for the production of Thyroid Hormones

Hydrogen Peroxide “activates” Iodine for the iodination of Tyrosine during the formation of Thyroid Hormones.  [2]

Immune System

Hydrogen Peroxide (after stimulation by the Hydrogen Peroxidase enzyme released by Eosinophils) extinguishes (oxidizes) Senescent Cell Antigen Auto-Antibodies/Antibody complexes (after the Antigens) have been neutralized by their complementary Antibodies.

Hydrogen Peroxide (employed as an agent for Oxygen Therapy) may help to kill Cancer cells.  Phagocytes secrete Hydrogen Peroxide as one of their defense mechanisms against Cancer cells.

Phagocytes secrete Hydrogen Peroxide as one of their defense mechanisms against and Viruses.

Hydrogen Peroxide (a few drops of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide solution instilled into the ears) may kill the Viruses that cause the Common Cold.  [3]

Hydrogen Peroxide (a few drops of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide solution instilled into the ears) may kill the Viruses that cause Influenza.  [4]

Oral Health

Hydrogen Peroxide (applied topically to the Teeth as a component of Teeth Bleaching kits) may reduce some cases of Tooth Discoloration (by removing stains from the Enamel of Teeth) - there are some concerns that overuse of Hydrogen Peroxide for Teeth Bleaching purposes may temporarily damage the Gums.  [5]

Skin

Hydrogen Peroxide (applied topically) may improve the ability of the Skin's cells to utilize Oxygen (i.e. after permeating the Skin, Hydrogen Peroxide is metabolized by the Catalase enzyme to form Oxygen and Water - both of which are beneficial to the Skin).
