Catalase

Overview

Catalase is an Antioxidant Oxidoreductase enzyme found in the Liver, Red Blood Cells and the Skin.

Aging Process

    Catalase (by preventing oxidative damage to Cells) may possess Life Extension potential:  ^[1]

 Species of animals with high endogenous Catalase production have longer life-spans.

Metabolism

 Catalase exerts Antioxidants effects that may inhibit Free Radicals damage to the Elastin content of the Skin. 

 Catalase scavenges and decomposes Peroxides (especially Hydrogen Peroxide) by converting them into Oxygen and Water (due to its Antioxidant function):

Nervous System

 Catalase may protect the Striatum (area of the Brain) from the toxic effects of Dopamine metabolites (e.g. 6-Hydroxydopamine, various Quinones and Free Radicals). 

Respiratory System

Chronic Obstructory Pulmonary DiseaseChronic Obstructory Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients are generally found to have lower levels/activity of Catalase.  ^[2]

Skin

 Catalase is present in human Skin (where it protects the Skin’s Elastin content from damage caused by Free Radicals).  ^[3]
