Striatum
Also known as: Corpus Striatum; the Neurons within the Striatum are known as Nigrostriatal Neurons; Striatal Neurons
Description
The Striatum is one of the two areas of the Cerebrum of the Brain that are collectively known as the Basal Ganglia. The Striatum is (geographically) located next to the Thalamus.
These Substances may Enhance the Function of the Striatum
Amino Acids
Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC) may enhance the release of Dopamine from Dopaminergic Neurons and may improve the binding of Dopamine to Dopamine Receptors in the Striatum. [1]
Enzymes
Catalase may protect the Striatum from the toxic effects of Dopamine metabolites (e.g. 6-Hydroxydopamine, various Quinones and Free Radicals).
Neurotransmitters
Some of the Dopamine-using (i.e. dopaminergic) Neurons of the Substantia Nigra area of the Brain extend into the Striatum (this Dopaminergic pathway is known as the Nigrostriatal pathway).
