Thyroid Hormones
Description
Thyroid Hormones are produced and secreted by the Thyroid Gland.
Biological Function and Therapeutic Effects of Thyroid Hormones
Cardiovascular System
Thyroid Hormones may help to prevent many types of Cardiovascular Diseases and are involved in the preservation of Cardiovascular function: [1]
Thyroid Hormones (¼ grain of a combination of all four Thyroid Hormones per day over a ten year period) has been demonstrated in a clinical trial to help prevent Atherosclerosis. [2]
Cells
Thyroid Hormones are essential for Growth (Growth cannot occur in the absence of Thyroid Hormones). [3]
Thyroid Hormones (especially Triiodothyronine (T3)) stimulate the production of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) in the Mitochondria of Cells. [4]
Immune System
Thyroid Hormones may stimulate the production of Antibodies. [5]
Thyroid Hormones may stimulate the production of Phagocytes. [6]
Thyroid Hormones may promote the regeneration of the Thymus. [7]
Metabolism
Thyroid Hormones control the body's Basal Metabolism (BMR).
It is speculated that replacement doses of Thyroid Hormones may alleviate Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) (based on the theory that the underlying cause of CFS may be Hypothyroidism). [8]
Thyroid Hormones prevent Hypothyroidism (Hypothyroidism is caused by insufficient production and secretion of Thyroid Hormones - especially Thyroxine (T4) and Triiodothyronine (T3)). [9]
Thyroid Hormones bind to Thyroid Hormone Receptors in the Nucleus of Cells where they stimulate the process of which increases the synthesis of Mitochondrial Proteins. [10]
Optimal levels of Thyroid Hormones may help to prevent Obesity (in part by stimulating the production and activity of Uncoupling Proteins): [11]
Thyroid Hormones stimulate the body’s utilization of Oxygen. [12]
Nervous System
Alzheimer's Disease patients often have sub-optimal ThyroidHormones levels (indicating that Alzheimer’s Disease patients should be tested for Thyroid Hormones deficiency and if found to be deficient, Thyroid Hormone replacement therapy should be initiated). [13]
Thyroid Hormones (especially Triiodothyronine (T3), used in conjunction with Pharmaceutical Antidepressants) may alleviate Depression. [14]
Optimal levels of Thyroid Hormones are required to maintain normal Memory function. [15]
Supplemental Thyroid Hormones may improve Mood & Mood Disorders in Hypothyroidism patients. [16]
