Overview

Carbohydrates are organic compounds of Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen in which (with few exceptions), the ratio of Hydrogen to Oxygen is 2:1.

Health Benefits of Carbohydrates

Many individual Carbohydrates have specific therapeutic effects that are described in their respective topics.

Metabolism

The body uses Carbohydrates as a source of Energy and heat (after conversion to Glucose via Glycogen which subsequently reverts back to Glucose).

Carbohydrates may Enhance the Function of these Substances

Amino Acids

Carbohydrates facilitate Tryptophan''s entry into the Brain if they are consumed at the same time as Tryptophan.

Lipids

Volatile Saturated Fatty Acids are manufactured within the Large Intestine from the fermentation of dietary Carbohydrates (especially Polysaccharides) by Beneficial Bacteria.

Krebs Cycle Chemicals

Acetyl Coenzyme A  is an end product of Carbohydrate metabolism within the body.

Carbohydrates Enhance the Function of these Substances

Dietary Carbohydrates (especially Polysaccharides) are fermented within the Large Intestine resulting in the manufacture of Butyric Acid.

These Substances may Enhance the Function of Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates

Dietary Carbohydrates are initially converted to and stored as Glycogen within the body until their subsequent conversion to either Glucose or Adipose Tissue.

Enzymes

Carbohydrate Digesting Enzymes are responsible for the digestion of dietary Carbohydrates.

The Enzymes contained within Lysosomes are responsible for the intracellular digestion of Carbohydrates.

Hormones

Thyroid Hormones influence many aspects of Carbohydrates metabolism.  [1]

Microorganisms

Microorganisms - Beneficial in the Large Intestine are responsible for the fermentation of dietary Carbohydrates (especially Polysaccharides) that results in the production of Volatile Saturated Fatty Acids.

Minerals

Chromium is essential for the proper metabolism of dietary Carbohydrates.  [2]

Iodine may facilitate the absorption of Carbohydrates.

Magnesium activates many Enzymes that are utilized in the metabolism of Carbohydrates.  [3]
