 Potassium - Dietary Sources

These Substances may Enhance the Function of Potassium

Amino Acids

Ethylene-Diamine-Tetra-Acetate (EDTA) - the synthetic Amino Acid used in Chelation Therapy – may help to increase intracellular Potassium levels.

Glutamic Acid may facilitate the transport of Potassium into the Spinal Fluid.

Taurine may facilitate the transport of Potassium into and out of the body's Cells.  [1]

Enzymes

Sodium/Potassium-ATPase transports Potassium into the Cell and transports Sodium out of the Cell.

Minerals

Magnesium functions as a carrier vehicle for the transport of Potassium into and out of Cell Membranes (i.e. it facilitates the maintenance of Potassium ).  [2]

Vitamins

Vitamin B6 may help to maintain the body's Sodium:Potassium balance.

Toxic Effects of Excessive Potassium Consumption

Excess Potassium is rare and is known as Hyperkalemia.

Cardiovascular System

Excessive consumption (i.e. greater than 15 grams per day) of Potassium may cause Tachycardia.

Consumption of more than 18 grams per day may cause Cardiac Arrest.

Potassium may Interfere with these Substances

Minerals

 Potassium may antagonize Iron.

 Potassium may antagonize Manganese.

Potassium competes with Sodium for absorption - the correct Sodium:Potassium ratio is 1:2:

The threat of Potassium displacing Sodium within the body is usually hypothetical in that most people consume excessive Sodium and insufficient Potassium.

Caution

Potassium supplements should NOT be consumed by persons using Potassium-Sparing Diuretics.

Forms of Potassium

Chelated Potassium is a generic term for all forms of Potassium consisting of Potassium bound to an Amino Acids:
