Overview


Bile, a thick alkaline fluid, is produced and secreted by the Liver, approximately 250-1,000 ml each day, and concentrated to twenty times its strength and stored in the Gallbladder where it is ejected sporadically into the Duodenum of the Small Intestine via the Bile Duct. The color of Bile can be either yellow, green or brown.

Bile is secreted into the Duodenum of the Small Intestine to emulsify Fats - Dietary

 The Phosphatidylcholine and Bile Salts contained in Bile emulsifies Fatty Acids by breaking them into tiny droplets, increasing the surface area of Fatty Acids which are then digested by Lipases.   Flatulence may occur as a result of insufficient production and release of Bile.

 Bilirubin is excreted from the body through Bile.

Substances that may Enhance the Function or Flow of Bile

Alkaloids

 Berberine may stimulate the secretion of Bile.  [1]

 Caffeine may stimulate the flow of Bile from the Liver.  [2] 

Amino Acids

 Taurine is an essential component of Bile - Taurine forms Taurocholate from Bile Acids.  [3] 

Bile Acids

 Cholesterol byproducts (Cholic Acid and Chenodeoxycholic Acid) are essential components of Bile.

Bile Salts

 Sodium Taurocholate helps to increase Cholesterol elimination in the Bile.
