Cyclic AMP
Description
Cyclic AMP is an molecule that acts as an intermediary (Second Messenger) between a Hormone and the biochemical process of the Hormone's target cell.
Biological Functions of cAMP
Insufficient cAMP activity or insufficient production of cAMP is an intermediate factor in the pathology of many ailments.
Cardiovascular System
cAMP mediates increased rate and contraction force of the Cardiac Muscle in the Heart. This aspect of cAMP is stimulated by Catecholamines.
Cells
cAMP transmits information from Receptors on Cell Membranes to the Superior Olivary Nucleus of Cells.
Enzymes
cAMP exerts most of its effects by stimulating cAMP-dependent Protein Kinases.
Hormones
CAMP regulates the production of Steroid Hormones (in response to ACTH or Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)).
Metabolism
cAMP mediates the mobilization of stored Energy (the breakdown of Carbohydrates in the Liver or Triglycerides in Fat Cells stimulated by Catecholamines). [1]
cAMP regulates the processe of which facilitates the breakdown of Adipose Tissue (fat cells) in persons afflicted with Obesity. [2]
Minerals
cAMP mediates Calcium (Ca2+) (regulated by Parathyroid Hormone).
Musculoskeletal System
cAMP mediates the relaxation of Smooth Muscle.
Nervous System
cAMP functions as an intracellular :
