Sexual Performance
Overview
Although not a full indication of Sexual Performance, for the purposes of this topic, Sexual Performance is defined as the ability to achieve Orgasm or Orgasms. The Ejaculation that occurs in conjunction with (male) Orgasm is stimulated by the Adrenergic Nervous System. The Erection of the Penis that is intrinsic to (male) Orgasm is under the control of the Parasympathetic Nervous System.
These Substances may Improve Sexual Performance
Alkaloids
Galanthamine (30 mg per day) may improve male SexualPerformance in men with psychological erectile dysfunction. [1]
Yohimbine may improve Sexual Performance in males. [2]
Amino Acids
Arginine (2,800 mg per day) may improve (male) Sexual Performance - by providing Nitrogen to the Nitric Oxide that is integral to the achievement of erections - Arginine may produce erections that are bigger, harder and more frequent. It may also increase male sexual endurance, i.e. erections that last for a longer period of time. [3]
Arginine may also enhance female Sexual Performance - due to its role in the production of Nitric Oxide in the Clitoris enabeling orgasm in the Clitoris. [4]
Histidine may improve Sexual Performance in women who find it difficult to achieve orgasm. The release of Histamine from Mast Cells is an essential requirement for female orgasm. It may also assist elderly men to reach orgasm more rapidly. [5]
Enzymes
Guanyl Cyclase is involved in (male) Sexual Performance: [6]
Activation of Guanyl Cyclase by Nitric Oxide results in an increase in Cyclic GMP production - Cyclic GMP directly relaxes Blood Vessels in the Corpus Cavernosum of the Penis, allowing these Blood Vessels to dilate (the underlying requirement for male Penis erections).
Hormones
Androstenedione is speculated to improve Sexual Performance (due to its role as a precursor for the endogenous production of Testosterone) (according to anecdotal reports).
DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone) (50 mg per day) may improve Sexual Performance (especially in elderly women). DHEA may also improve Sexual Performance in men. [7]
Supplemental, exogenous Human Growth Hormone (hGH) may improve SexualPerformance (according to anecdotal reports).
Melatonin (0.8 - 8.0 mg per day) may improve male Sexual Performance. [8]
Testosterone (cream applied topically to the Clitoris) may improve female Sexual Performance (by increasing the sensitivity of the Clitoris).
Testosterone may improve male Sexual Performance (men with low serum Testosterone levels (i.e. below 1.4 ng/ml) exhibit impairment in Sexual Performance (as measured by night erections): [9]
Testosterone Cypionate (cream applied topically to the Penis) may improve Sexual Performance in males. [10]
Lipids
Forskolin may enhance Sexual Performance in males (due to its ability to increase cAMP levels - cAMP relaxes Smooth Muscles in the Penis).
Minerals
Zinc may improve Sexual Performance (it may increase the intensity of orgasm in men). [11]
Neurohormones
Oxytocin is released into the bloodstream at the time of orgasm (resulting in the relaxation that occurs following orgasm). The release of Oxytocin increases by 500% at the moment of male orgasm.
Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP) is involved in male Sexual Performance - large quantities of VIP are released during male Sexual stimulation - it stimulates the dilation of Blood Vessels in the Penis that leads to Erections: [12]
Injections of Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide into the Penis stimulate Erections.
