Description

Vasopressin, also known as Antidiuretic Hormone, is a Neuropeptide produced by the Hypothalamus and stored and released by the posterior Pituitary Gland.  Chemically, it is an Oligopeptide containing 9 Amino Acids.

Biological Functions of Vasopressin (and Health Benefits of Exogenous Vasopressin)

Cardiovascular System

Vasopressin (administered via injection) may help to reverse Anaphylactic Shock.  [1]

Vasopressin may improve Stroke-induced Speech Impairment.  [2]

Electrolytes

Vasopressin regulates Electrolytes in the body.

Excretory System

Diabetes Insipidus occurs as a result of Vasopressin deficiency and exogenous Vasopressin is an effective treatment for the side-effects of Diabetes Insipidus (e.g. it prevents the frequent Urination that occurs with this disease).

Vasopressin controls Urine volume and prevents Urination - Frequent (Polyuria).

Musculoskeletal System

Vasopressin may cause contraction of Smooth Muscle (especially the Smooth Muscles of Blood Vessels).

Nervous System

Vasopressin’s mental enhancement effects are effective for both normal, healthy persons and age-impaired persons.

Vasopressin may improve Memory and Intelligence in Alzheimer''s Disease patients.  [3]

Exogenous Vasopressin may help to prevent and rapidly treat Amnesia.  [4]

Vasopressin may increase Attention Span.  [5]

Vasopressin may increase Concentration ability.  [6]

 Vasopressin may increase Coordination.  [7]

 Vasopressin may increase Creativity:

 Vasopressin may improve Visualization ability.

Vasopressin may improve Memory in Dementia patients.  [8]

Depression may occur as a result of Vasopressin deficiency and exogenous Vasopressin may produce positive results in some patients with histories of severe Depression:

Depression patients may exhibit lower levels of Vasopressin in their Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF).

Exogenous Vasopressin may alleviate Hallucinations in those people who are prone to them.

Vasopressin (20 IU per day for four days administered within 16 - 40 hours after injury) may improve Short-Term Memory after Head Injuries such as Concussion.  [9]

Vasopressin may be responsible for some aspects of human Intelligence.

Vasopressin may facilitate more effective Learning by helping to "imprint" new information in the memory centers of the Brain:  [10]

Vasopressin is essential for new Learning to occur.  It transforms the Nerve Impulses associated with Learning into chemically encoded Memory.

Vasopressin is reported to be very effective in situations where there is a large amount of new information to Learn.

Vasopressin may counteract the Learning impairment experienced by infants whose mothers consumed Alcohol (ethanol) during their Pregnancy.
