Memory - Long-Term
Also known as: LTM; LTP; Long-Term Potentiation; Reference Memory
Description
Long-Term Memory is a type of Memory involving the relatively permanent storage of sensory and other information.
Biology of Long-Term Memory
Nervous System
The Brain's N-methyl-D-Aspartate Receptors (NMDA Receptors) are involved in the potentiation (i.e. retention for longer periods) of Long-Term Memory.
It is presently believed that Dreams (which occur during Sleep - Rapid Eye Movement) are responsible for the transfer of Memories between Short-Term Memory and Long-Term Memory - lack of REM Sleep is believed to inhibit Long-Term Memory. [1]
These Substances may Improve Long-Term Memory
Alkaloids
Galanthamine may improve Long-Term Memory. [2]
Amino Acids
Arginine may facilitate the potentiation of Long-Term Memory (by stimulating the production of Nitric Oxide (NO) - the endogenous messenger responsible for the potentiation of Long-Term Memory. [3]
Carotenoids
Crocin may inhibit the ability of Alcohol (ethanol) to impair Long-TermMemory. [4]
Growth Factors
Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) enhances Long-Term Memory. [5]
Hormones
DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone) and Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate (DHEA-S) may enhance Long-Term Memory. [6]
Estrogens may improve Long-Term Memory (in women). [7]
Human Growth Hormone (hGH) may improve Long-Term Memory. [8]
