Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor
Also known as: BDNF; Brain-Derived Nerve Factor
Description
Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor is a type of Neurotrophic Factor. It is produced primarily in the Brain and Spinal Cord by Glial Cells, but is also produced by Schwann Cells. BDNF is present the Hippocampus, Cortex, and Basal Forebrain regions of the Brain.
Biological Function of BDNF
Nervous System
BDNF may reduce Anxiety: [1]
Panic Disorder may occur as a result of reduced BDNF levels. [2]
BDNF may reduce Appetite. [3]
BDNF improves the utilization of Glucose by the Brain. [4]
BDNF may help to prevent Depression. [5]
BDNF enhances Learning ability.
BDNF enhances Memory - Long-Term. [6]
BDNF is involved in the survival and growth of Neurons including:
Cholinergic neurons.
GABAergic Neurons.
Dopaminergic Neurons.
BDNF is involved in the survival and growth of Motor Nerves.
Optimal levels of BDNF may help to prevent Parkinson's Disease.
BDNF may help to prevent Schizophrenia. [7]
BDNF enhances Spatial Memory.
Potential Therapeutic Usage of (Exogenous) BDNF
Nervous System
Exogenous BDNF is under investigation as a treatment for Alzheimer's Disease (it improves Glucose utilization by the Brain). [8]
