Overview

Dehydroepiandrosterone, DHEA, is an Androgen Steroid Hormone manufactured primarily in the Adrenal Cortex of the Adrenal Glands and is converted to approximatley 150 metabolites, each having unique actions within the body.DHEA is also regarded as a Neurosteroid as it is also produced in small amounts by individual Neurons in the Brain.  DHEA is the most abundant Steroid Hormone in the human bloodstream - although it is an Androgen, it is synthesized in both males and females.

These Substances may Enhance DHEA Production

Enzymes

16-Alpha-Hydroxylase catalzyes the conversion of DHEA to 16-Alpha-Hydroxy-DHEA.

17-Beta-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase catalyzes the conversion of DHEA to Androstenediol (and also catalyzes the reverse reaction, i.e. the conversion of Androstenediol to DHEA).

Hormones

Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) governs the release of DHEA from the Adrenal Cortex.

Supplemental, exogenous Melatonin may stimulate the bodies production of DHEA.  [1]

Supplemental, exogenous Progesterone cream applied topically to the soft parts of the Skin - i.e. the male scrotum or female Breasts may increase the production of endogenous DHEA.

Minerals

Chromium Chromium Picolinate form may increase DHEA levels.  [2]

Smart Drugs

Deprenyl may increase serum DHEA levels.

DHEA may Inhibit these Potentially Toxic Substances

Amino Acids

DHEA may exert protective effects in the Brain that counteract the ability of Glutamic Acid to function as an excitotoxin.  [3]

Cytokines

DHEA may inhibit the excessive production of Interleukin 6.  [4]

DHEA may inhibit the excessive production of Interleukin 10.  [5]

DHEA may prevent the excessive generation of Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) caused by Lipopolysaccharides.  [6]

Enzymes

 DHEA may inhibit Beta-Secretase 1.  [7]

 DHEA may inhibit Collagenase.

DHEA may inhibit the activity of Monoamine Oxidase (both MAO-A and MAO-B forms).  [8]

Hormones

DHEA may counteract the ability of Corticosterone to damage the Neurons of the Hippocampus of the Brain.  [9]

DHEA may lower elevated Cortisol levels and may counteract the toxic effects of Cortisol.  [10]

DHEA may inhibit (detrimental) age-related increases in Insulin production/release.  [11]

Lipopolysaccharides

DHEA may counteract the toxic effects of Lipopolysaccharides (LPS):  [12]

DHEA may prevent the excessive generation of Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) caused by Lipopolysaccharides.

Patended Medicines

Supplemental DHEA may counteract many of the toxic effects associated with long-term use of Glucocorticosteroids - Pharmaceutical:  [13]

Supplemental DHEA may counteract the ability of Prednisone to suppress the Immune System and reduces the likelihood of Prednisone-induced increases in susceptibility to Bacterial and Viral Diseases.  [14]

Proteins

DHEA may inhibit the production of Amyloid-Beta Protein.  [15]
