Monoamine Oxidase
Also known as: MAO; Adrenalin Oxidase; Amine Oxidase (Flavin-containing); Tyraminase; Tyramine Oxidase
Description
Monoamine Oxidase is a group of Oxidase Enzymes. These Enzymes are present inside Neurons and other Cells including those of the Liver.
Biological Function of Monoamine Oxidase
Amines
MAO breaks down (by oxidizing and inactivating) toxic Amino Acids such as Tyramine - this prevents the toxic effects that can occur if Tyramine enters the Brain.
Toxic Effects of Excessive MAO Production
Nervous System
MAO breaks down (inactivates/oxidizes/metabolizes) essential Monoamine Neurotransmitters (this activity, when under control, is desirable to prevent the excessive accumulation of Neurotransmitters, however excessive MAO production causes depletion of essential Neurotransmitters):
MAO catalyzes the conversion of Adrenaline to Dihydroxymendalic Acid.
