Description

Telomerase is a type of Ribonucleoprotein Polymerase (RNA-Dependent DNA Polymerase) Enzyme.

Telomerase is expressed in embryonic Cells, in male germ Cells, and in proliferative Cells such as hematopoietic Stem Cells, activated Lymphocytes and Intestinal Crypt Cells.

Biological Function of Telomerase

Cells

Telomerase elongates Telomeres (components of the Chromosomes of Cells that shorten with each successive replication of a Cell).  By elongating Telomeres, Telomerase may lengthen the lifespan of Cells (and thereby has Life Extension potential).  Conversely, Telomerase also allows Cancer cells to attain “immortality”.  [1]
