Also known as:  Coenzyme 1;  Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Hydrogen

Description

NADH is a reduced form of Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD) that includes Hydrogen in its molecular structure.

Biological Function of NADH

Cells

NADH is present in every living Cell.

Detoxification

NADH is involved in the detoxification of Alcohols:  [1]

The Hydrogen atom that is removed from Alcohols during their processing by Alcohol Dehydrogenase is transferred to NAD which becomes (because of the addition of Hydrogen) NADH.

Metabolism

NADH is an important participant in the body’s Electron Transport System and Krebs Cycle (Energy-producing processes that occur within the Mitochondria of the body’s Cells):

NADH is an essential cofactor for the activity of Complex I (an endogenous enzyme in the Mitochondria which is integral to the Electron Transport System, which produces much of the body’s Energy).  [2]

Each “turn” of the Krebs Cycle produces three NADH molecules which faciliates the endogenous production of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP).  [3]

Therapeutic Uses of Exogenous NADH

Aging Process

NADH may retard some aspects of the Aging Process - NADH facilitates the repair of damaged Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) (presumably by supplying the Energy necessary to “fuel” the repair of DNA that has become damaged as a result of the progression of the Aging Process).  [4]

Cardiovascular System

NADH may lower elevated Blood Pressure in High Blood Pressure patients.  [5]

Ears/Hearing

NADH may improve Hearing ability.  [6]

Immune System

NADH may enhance the function of the Immune System (cellular Immunity).  [7]

Metabolism

NADH is a potent Antioxidants.  [8]

Supplemental NADH (5 mg per day) may improve various measures of Athletic Performance.  [9]

NADH may alleviate Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).  [10]

NADH may increase the body’s production of Energy (via its function as an essential cofactor for Complex I in the Electron Transport System which leads to the production of the “universal energy molecule” - Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)).  [11]
