Colon Cancer - Substances that Prevent/Treat

These Substances may Alleviate/Prevent Colon Cancer

Alkaloids

 Berberine may stimulate the apoptosis (cell death) of Colon Cancer cells.  ^[1]

 Capsaicin may facilitate the apoptosis (cell death) of Colon Cancer cells.  ^[2]

Amino Acids

 Arginine may retard the progression of Colon Cancer.  ^[3]

 The N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) form of Cysteine may help to prevent Colon Cancer.  ^[4]

 S-Adenosylmethionine (SAMe) may help to prevent Colon Cancer.  ^[5]

Auxins

 Diindolylmethane (DIM) may inhibit the development of carcinogen-induced Colon Cancer. 

 Indole-3-Carbinol (I3C) may counteract the ability of many dietary carcinogens (such as Heterocylic Aromatic Amines (HAAs)) to initiate Colon Cancer.  ^[6]

Carbohydrates

 Beta 1,6 Glucan is presently undergoing clinical trials for the treatment of ColonCancer. 

 Chitosan (6,000 mg per day) may help to prevent Colon Cancer (by inhibiting the putrefaction in the Intestines).  ^[7]

 D-Glucaric Acid may help to prevent and treat Colon Cancer.  ^[8]

 Dietary Fiber may help to prevent Colon Cancer due to the shorter intestinal transit time induced by high-fiber diets which minimizes the exposure of the Colon to carcinogens (conversely, the low-fiber diets cause lengthier intestinal transit time which increases the period of time that the Colon is exposed to carcinogens).  In addition, Dietary Fiber increases the production of Short-Chain Saturated Fatty Acids such as Butyric Acid which help to prevent Colon Cancer.  ^[9]

 Cellulose may counteract (by binding to) carcinogens in the Colon and may inhibit the ability of Bile Acids to initiate Colon Cancer (by converting Bile Acids to a biologically-inert form).  ^[10]

 Hemicelluloses may counteract carcinogens in the Colon. 

 Inulin may help to prevent Colon Cancer (by facilitating the growth of Bifidobacteria in the Large Intestine).  ^[11]

 Lignin may help to protect against Colon Cancer by removing Bile Acids from the Bowel. 

 Pectins may provide some protection against Colon Cancer:  ^[12]

 Apple Pectin may help to prevent Colon Cancer.  ^[13]

 Psyllium may help to prevent Colon Cancer.  ^[14]

 Starch (especially Resistant Starch) may help to prevent Colon Cancer.  ^[15]

 Amylose that escapes digestion (i.e. Resistant Starch) may help to prevent Colon Cancer (by increasing the production of Butyric Acid in the Colon and by facilitating the excretion of Bile Acids).  ^[16]

 Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) (3,000 mg per day) may help to prevent Colon Cancer (by significantly reducing the activity of detrimental enzymes in the Colon).  ^[17]

 Fucoidan may help to prevent/treat Colon Cancer.  ^[18]

 Galactose may help to prevent Colon Cancer.  ^[19]

 Glucosamine may help to prevent Colon Cancer.  ^[20]

 Kureha (a Polysaccharide present in Karawatake Mushrooms) may prolong life span and duration of remission in Colon Cancer patients.  ^[21]

 Protease Inhibitors may retard the growth of Colon Cancer.

Lignans

 Enterolactone may inhibit the growth of Colon Cancer Cells.  ^[35]

Lipids
