Health Benefits of Carnitine

Aging

Carnitine supplementation may facilitate Life Extension:

Carnitine levels in the Brain, Blood, Heart and Muscles decrease in tandem with the progression of the Aging Process, while Carnitine levels in the liver increase in tandem with the Aging Process, indicating that the transportation of Carnitine from the Liver to the blood declines in tandem with the Aging Process.

Carnitine may retard the progression of the Aging Process by preventing the death of cells via the maintenance of energy supply to individual cells.  [1]

Cardiovascular System

Carnitine may alleviate some cases of Anemia especially forms of Anemia that occur in persons undergoing dialysis treatment.  [2]

Carnitine may be useful for the treatment of Sickle-Cell Anemia.  [3]

Cardiac Muscle contains high amounts of Carnitine.  [4]

Cardiovascular Diseases patients often exhibit Carnitine deficiency:  [5]

Angina may occur as a result of Carnitine deficiency.  Carnitine (900 - 2,000 mg per day) may reduce the pain and other symptoms of Angina.  Angina patients may become more active with Carnitine supplementation.  [6]

Carnitine may help to prevent Atherosclerosis by lowering elevated Lipoprotein (a) levels.  [7]

Cardiomyopathy patients are often deficient in Carnitine.  [8]

Supplemental Carnitine (2 grams per day) may improve the condition of Congestive Heart Failure patients

Carnitine may lower Heartbeat rate, may reduce fluid accumulation and may improve breathing ability in CHF patients without side-effects.  [9]

Heart disease patients may be able to engage in Exercise for longer periods when they are supplemented with Carnitine.

Carnitine is stored primarily in the Heart where it facilitates cardiac contractions.  [10]

Carnitine supplementing with 2,000 mg per day may improve the condition of people who have previously experienced a Heart Attack.  [11]

Carnitine may lower Blood Pressure in High Blood Pressure patients.  [12]

Carnitine supplementing with 2,000 - 4,000 mg per day may increase walking distance in Intermittent Claudication patients.  [13]

Supplemental Carnitine is often recommended for Ischemic Heart Disease patients.  [14]

Carnitine supplementing with 3,000 mg per day for at least four months may improve the condition of Mitral Valve Prolapse patients.  [15]

Carnitine supplementing with 3,000 mg per day may alleviate Raynaud's Disease.  [16]

Carnitine may stabilize the fluidity of the Cell Membranes of Red Blood Cells.  [17]

Cells

Carnitine resides in the Cytoplasm of Cells where it combines with molecules of Acetyl Coenzyme A and molecules of Long-Chain Saturated Fatty Acids to form a complex that can be transported across the cell membrane wall into the Mitochondria.  [18]

Digestive System

Carnitine may be useful for the treatment of Crohn's Disease.  [19]

Carnitine supplementing with 2,500 – 3,500 mg per day may reduce the number of vomiting episodes in Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome patients.  [20]

Carnitine may inhibit the ability of Alcohol to damage the Gastric Mucosa.  [21]

Carnitine may inhibit the ability of Alcohol to cause Ulcers - Gastric.  [22]

Carnitine may be useful for the treatment of Ulcerative Colitis.  [23]

Excretory System

Carnitine may reduce some of the side effects associated with Chronic Kidney Failure.  [24]

Eyes/Vision

Carnitine may help to prevent Cataracts.  [25]

Eyes - Dry patients have lower Carnitine levels in their tears.  [26]

Hair

Carnitine may facilitate Hair growth in Male Pattern Baldness patients.  [27]

Immune System

People infected with the HIV virus that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome often exhibit Carnitine deficiency.

6 grams of supplemental Carnitine per day is recommended for persons infected with HIV).  [28]
