Description

The Gastric Mucosa is the Mucous Membrane that lines the Stomach Wall.

Biological Function of the Gastric Mucosa

Digestive System

The Gastric Mucosa contains Parietal Cells that are responsible for the secretion of Gastrin (hormone) which further stimulates the secretion of Gastric Juice into the Stomach (when stimulated by Histamine).

Nervous System

The Gastric Mucosa contain Histamine H2 Receptors (that are stimulated by Histamine).

These Substances may be Beneficial for the Gastric Mucosa

Alkaloids

Capsaicin may protect the Gastric Mucosa against Alcohol and Aspirin-induced damage.  [1]

Amino Acids

Carnitine may inhibit the ability of Alcohol (ethanol) to damage the Gastric Mucosa.  [2]

N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) may inhibit the ability of Alcohol (ethanol) to damage the Gastric Mucosa.  [3]

Taurine may inhibit the ability of Alcohol (ethanol) to damage the Gastric Mucosa.  [4]

Enzymes

Cyclooxygenase (COX-1 form only) maintains the integrity of the Gastric Mucosa.

Hormones

Melatonin may exert protective effects on the Gastric Mucosa.  [5]

Minerals

Selenium may inhibit the ability of Alcohol (ethanol) to damage the Gastric Mucosa.  [6]
