Lymphocytes
Description
Lymphocytes are a group of Agranulocyte White Blood Cells that comprise 25% of the total number of White Blood Cells in the healthy human body. Lymphocytes are formed within the various Organs that are composed of Lymphoid Tissue (e.g. Lymph Nodes) and are transported around the body via Blood Circulation and in Lymph (Lymphatic Fluid) via Lymph Vessels.
Biological Function of Lymphocytes
Immune System
Lymphocytes are responsible for the specific resistance of the body to disease.
Lymphocytes are stored in the Tonsils in readiness to attack Antigens that may enter the body via the Respiratory System.
These Substances may Enhance the Function of Lymphocytes
Amino Acids
Alanine may stimulate the production of Lymphocytes.
Arginine may stimulate the production of Lymphocytes by the Thymus gland and may also stimulate their activity. [1]
Glutamine may stimulate the growth of Lymphocytes and may serve as a fuel source for Lymphocytes. [2]
Ornithine Alpha-Ketoglutarate (OKG) may increase the production and activity of Lymphocytes. [3]
Carotenoids
Beta-Carotene may prevent X-Rays-generated Free Radicals from damaging the Chromosomes of Lymphocytes. [4]
Lycopene may protect the Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) content of Lymphocytes from oxidative damage. [5]
Hormones
Adrenaline release stimulates an increase in the number of circulating Lymphocytes. [6]
Human Growth Hormone (hGH) may enhance the production and activity of Lymphocytes.
Melatonin may exert Antioxidant effects that protect the Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) content of Lymphocytes from Radiation and Free Radicals damage.
Immune System Chemicals
Lymphokines initiate interactions between Lymphocytes and other cells and chemicals of the Immune System.
Lipids
Beta-Sitosterol may stimulate the proliferation of Lymphocytes. [7]
Forskolin may activate Lymphocytes.
Ginsenoside Rg1 may stimulate the activity of Lymphocytes. [8]
Minerals
Lithium may stimulate the production of Lymphocytes.
Selenium may enhance the function of Lymphocytes. [9]
All types of Lymphocytes require Zinc for their production. [10]
Nucleic Compounds
Supplemental Ribonucleic Acid (RNA) may enhance the proliferation of Lymphocytes. [11]
Peptides
Carnitine may enhance the function of Lymphocytes. [12]
