Also known as:  Blood Glucose

Description

Blood Sugar is the level of Glucose in the Blood.

Glycemic Index and Blood Sugar Levels

Two indexes, Glycemic Index, and Glycemic Load have been developed as a means of rating the effect that a particular Food has on Blood Sugar levels:

A low Glycemic Index diet or low Glycemic Load diet may help to lower elevated Blood Sugar levels.

A high Glycemic Index diet or high Glycemic Load diet may increase Blood Sugar levels.

These Substances may Regulate Blood Sugar Levels

Amino Acids

Glutamine may help to normalize Blood Sugar levels.  [1]

Isoleucine may regulate and stabilize Blood Sugar levels.

Leucine may regulate and stabilize Blood Sugar levels.  [2]

Carbohydrates

Cellulose may normalize Blood Sugar levels.

Several types of Gums may normalize Blood Sugar levels:

Guar Gum may normalize Blood Sugar levels (especially in cases of Diabetes Mellitus Type 2).  [3]

Glucomannan may help to normalize Blood Sugar levels.  [4]

Glycogen is converted (by Adrenaline or Glucagon) into Glucose.

Electromagnetic Radiation

Atmospheric Ions - Negative may help to stabilize Blood Sugar levels.

Enzymes

Glucose-6-Phosphatase catalyzes the dephosphorylation of Glucose-6-Phosphate to free Glucose (which subsequently enters the bloodstream and increases Blood Sugar levels):

Caution:  excessive activity of Glucose-6-Phosphatase can raise Blood Sugar levels to excessively high levels.

Factors

Glucose Tolerance Factor (GTF) is involved in the regulation of Blood Sugar levels.

Hormones

Adrenaline may increase Blood Sugar levels by stimulating the conversion of Glycogen into Glucose in the Liver and releasing it into the Blood.

Cortisone may increase Blood Sugar levels by decreasing Glucose uptake by the body's tissues.

DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone) may help to normalize Blood Sugar levels and inhibits age-related increases in Insulin levels.  [5]

Glucagon increases low Blood Sugar levels by stimulating the conversion of Glycogen into Glucose in the Liver.

Insulin lowers elevated Blood Sugar levels by stimulating the conversion of Glucose into Glycogen within the Liver and Muscles ().

Leptin may normalize Blood Sugar levels.  [6]

Optimal Testosterone levels may help to lower elevated Blood Sugar (Glucose) levels.  [7]

Lipids

Beta-Sitosterol may normalize Blood Sugar levels in Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 patients.

Corosolic Acid may lower Blood Sugar levels in Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 patients.  [8]

Minerals

Chromium may regulate the body’s Blood Sugar levels - Chromium supplementation may reduce Blood Sugar in people with high Blood Sugar levels and may increase Blood Sugar in people with low Blood Sugar levels.  [9]

Vitamins

Biotin may help to regulate Blood Sugar levels.  [10]

Lipoic Acid may normalize Blood Sugar levels.

Vitamin C (2,000 mg per day) competes with Glucose due to its chemical similarity to Glucose - Vitamin C may improve the disposal of Glucose (probably by encouraging the body’s Cells to utilize more Glucose).  This results in lower Blood Sugar levels.  [11]

Vitamin D may help to lower elevated Blood Sugar levels.  [12]
