Leptin is a type of Peptide Hormone produced by Adipocytes in Adipose Tissue. It is a type of Adipokine.

 

Biological Function of Leptin

Metabolism

 Leptin increases Basal Metabolism (BMR) and stimulates .  [1]

 Leptin may normalize Blood Sugar levels.  [2]

 Persons afflicted with Obesity have blood levels of Leptin that are five times higher than those of normal, healthy persons (although Leptin exerts anti-Obesity effects, persons afflicted with Obesity are insensitive to its effects (this phenomena is known as Leptin insensitivity)).  [3]

 

Nervous System

 Leptin may reduce Appetite by acting on Receptors in the Hypothalamus that regulate Appetite.  [4]
