Description

Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 is a form of Diabetes Mellitus that is classified as an Autoimmune Disease.  It generally manifests during childhood and is characterized by the destruction of the Insulin-secreting Beta Cells of the Islets of Langerhans in the Pancreas.

Prevalence

Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 accounts for 5% - 12% of the total number of Diabetes Mellitus cases.

These Substances may Prevent or Control Diabetes Mellitus Type 1

Amino Acids

Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC) may be useful for the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus Type 1.  [1]

Alpha-Ketoglutarate (Pyridoxine Alpha-Ketoglutarate (PAK) form - 1,800 mg per day) may enhance the therapeutic effectiveness of Insulin and Phenformin in Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 patients.  [2]

Taurine (1,500 mg per day) may alleviate Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 (by potentiating the effects of Insulin).  [3]

Hormones

Pregnenolone may rejuvenate the Beta Cells of the Pancreas in Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 patients.

Lignans

Secoisolariciresinolmay help to prevent Diabetes Mellitus Type 1.  [4]

Lipids

Omega-3 Fatty Acids may help to prevent Diabetes Mellitus Type 1.  [5]

Minerals

Calcium AEP may reduce the requirement for exogenous Insulin in Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 patients and may help to correct the underlying Autoimmune abnormality that is associated with Diabetes Mellitus Type 1.  [6]

Chromium (especially the Chromium Picolinate form) may improve Insulin sensitivity in Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 patients and lowers elevated serum Triglycerides in Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 patients.  [7]

Magnesium may reduce the requirement for exogenous Insulin in Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 patients and may reduce the risk of (diabetic) Neuropathy in Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 patients. [8]

Vanadium (Vanadyl Sulfate form) may lower Blood Sugar levels and increases Glucose uptake in Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 patients.  [9]

Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 patients are often found to be deficient in Zinc and supplemental Zinc (15 - 25 mg per day) may lower elevated Blood Sugar levels in Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 patients.  [10]

Nucleic Compounds

Inosine may help to prevent Diabetes Mellitus Type 1.  [11]

Prescribed Medications

Metformin is a useful treatment for Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 - by increasing the body’s sensitivity to the effects of Insulin, Metformin reduces the effective dose of exogenous Insulin required by Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 patients.  (Metformin is officially approved only for the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus Type 2).  [12]

Minocycline (25 mg taken every 48 hours) may be useful for the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus Type 1.

Olmesartan (160 mg per day taken as one 40 mg dose each six hours) may be useful for the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus Type 1.

Polyphenols

Curcumin may reduce the Kidney damage (Diabetic Nephropathy) that occurs in Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 patients.  [13]

Epicatechin may be a useful adjunct therapy for the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus Type 1:  [14]

Epicatechin may lower elevated Blood Sugar levels in Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 patients (due to the Epicatechin content of Green Tea).

Epicatechin may help to regenerate inactive Beta Cells of the Pancreas in Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 patients.  [15]

Silymarin may be useful for the prevention and treatment of Diabetes Mellitus Type1 (due to its ability to protect the Beta-Cells of the Pancreas from cell death).  [16]
