These Substances may Protect Against the Toxic Effects Of Tobacco Smoking

Amino Acids

Arginine may inhibit the adhesion of Monocytes to the Endothelium (an underlying event in the course of Atherosclerosis) that is initiated by Tobacco smoking.  [1]

Cysteine(especially the N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) form of Cysteine) may inhibit the carcinogens in Tobacco Smoke and may prevent damage to the Bronchial Tubes from Tobacco Smoke condensates:  [2]

Cysteine may also prevent the Cross-Linking of the body’s endogenous Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) that is caused by Tobacco Smoking.  [3]

Cysteine (500 - 2,000 mg per day) may help to prevent Bronchitis in Tobacco smokers.

Cysteine may help to loosen the Mucous congestion that occurs during smoker’s Cough.

The NAC form of Cysteine may inhibit the ability of Tobacco smoking to cause Emphysema.  [4]

Taurine may reduce the risk of Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke in Tobacco smokers.  [5]

Carbohydrates

D-Glucaric Acid may inhibit the ability of Tobacco smoking to cause Lung Cancer.  [6]

Carotenoids

Lycopene may reduce the carcinogenicity of Tobacco and may inhibit the ability of Tobacco to cause Stomach Cancer and Emphysema.  [7]

Hormones

Melatonin may counteract some (but not all) of the Lung damage caused by Tobacco smoking.  [8]

Lipids

Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) may help to prevent Cardiovascular Disease and Respiratory System ailments in Tobacco smokers.  [9]

Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) may help to prevent Cardiovascular Disease and Respiratory System ailments in Tobacco smokers.  [10]

Phosphatidylcholine may alleviate many of the toxic effects that occur in the Lung tissues as a result of Tobacco smoking.

Minerals

Selenium may counteract many of the toxic effects of Tobacco smoking.  [11]

Zinc may strengthen the Mucous Membranes of the Lungs and Bronchial Tubes in Tobaco smokers.

Organic Acids

Optimum endogenous Uric Acid levels may help to prevent Tobacco-induced Lung Cancer.

Peptides

Glutathione may counteract the toxic effects of Tobacco smoking.

Polyphenols

Curcumin may inhibit the ability of Tobacco to cause various types of Cancer (especially Lung Cancer).  [12]

By inhibiting the Cytochrome P-450 CYP2A6 enzyme, Methoxsalen (a Furocoumarin that is used as a Pharmaceutical Drug) may inhibit the conversion of procarcinogens in Tobacco smoke into their active carcinogenic forms.  [13]

Pycnogenol may inhibit the conversion of the Nitrosamine named Methylnitrosamino-1-(3-pyridyl)-l-butanone (NNK) which is present in Tobacco smoke to its carcinogenic, toxic metabolites, thereby helping to prevent Lung Cancer and other toxic effects caused by this Nitrosamine.  Pycnogenol inhibits the abnormal Blood Clotting (platelet aggregation) caused by Tobacco smoking.  [14]

Resveratrol may inhibit Tobacco smoke-induced damage to the Trachea.  [15]

Smart Drugs

Piracetam may counteract the Hypoxia (reduced Oxygen availability) associated with Tobacco smoking.

Sulfuric Compounds

Diallyl Sulfide may inhibit the carcinogenicity of some of the components of Tobacco Smoke.

Indole-3-Carbinol may inhibit the ability of Tobacco smoke to cause Lung Cancer.  [16]

Phenethyl Isothiocyanate (PEITC) may inhibit the ability of the primary carcinogenic substance in Tobacco (4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl-1-butanone)) to initiate Lung Cancer.  [17]

Vitamins

Folic Acid (10,000 micrograms [=10 mg] combined with 500 micrograms of Vitamin B12) daily may reverse pre-cancerous cell changes in Bronchial tissue of 20 year pack/day smokers.  [18]

Vitamin A may strengthen the Mucous Membranes of the Lungs and Bronchial Tubes of Tobacco smokers.  [19]

Vitamin B1 may detoxify the carcinogenic compounds in Tobacco and may combat smoker's Cough:  [20]

Vitamin A may inhibit the ability of Tobacco to cause Emphysema.

Vitamin B5 may protect against the toxic effects of Tobacco smoke.

Vitamin B12 may protect against the toxic effects of Tobacco smoke - 500 micrograms of VitaminB12 (combined with 10,000 mcg Folic Acid) daily reversed pre-cancerous changes in the cells of the Bronchial tissue of 20 year pack/day smokers.  [21]

Vitamin C may counteract some of the toxic effects associated with Tobacco smoking:  [22]

Vitamin C may decrease the Tobacco-induced Oxidation of LDL Cholesterol.

Vitamin C may improve the function of the Endothelium in Tobacco smokers.

Vitamin C (1,000 mg per day) may reduce blood Lead levels in Tobacco smokers.
