Papain

Also known as:  Papainase;  Papayotin;  Velardon;  Vermizym

Papain is a type of Proteolytic dietary Enzyme.

Cardiovascular System

 Papain may help to break down Fibrin and Fibrinogen that are implicated in abnormal Blood Clotting (via the process of Fibrinolysis).  ^[1]

 Papain may help to prevent Thrombosis (by inhibiting abnormal Blood Clotting). 

Digestive System

 Papain (500 - 1,000 mg consumed with meals) may improve the digestion of the Gliadin component of Gluten in Celiac Disease patients, thereby allowing Celiac Disease patients to tolerate some Gluten in their diets.  ^[2]

 Papain facilitates the digestion of Proteins - Dietary.

Immune System

 Papain is one of the Enzymes utilized in Enzyme Therapy (i.e. involving multiple Enzymes, especially Proteolytic Enzymes) to break up (degrade) the Immune Complexes that are theorized to cause various Autoimmune Diseases including: 

 Multiple Sclerosis 

 Rheumatoid Arthritis 

 Papain may interfere with the growth of the malignant Cells of many forms of Cancer (by helping to stimulate the body’s endogenous production of anti-Cancer compounds such as Interleukin 1, Interleukin 6 and Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF)):  ^[3]

 Papain (combined with Chymotrypsin and Trypsin) may be useful for the treatment of Melanoma.  ^[4]

 Papain (combined with Chymotrypsin and Trypsin) may be useful for the treatment of Multiple Myeloma.

 Papain may alleviate the Inflammation caused by sports injuries.  ^[5]

 Papain (when combined with Chymotrypsin and Trypsin administered orally) may accelerate the healing of Shingles.  ^[6]

Metabolism

 Papain possesses Antioxidants properties.

 Papain may reverse and may prevent Cross-Linking - Papain may digest 35 - 100 times its own weight in Cross-Linked Proteins within the human body.  ^[7]

Musculoskeletal System

 Papain (especially when used in combination with other Proteases) may minimize the Pain and Inflammation associated with Osteoarthritis.  ^[8]
