Thrombosis
Also known as: Thrombus (individual Blood Clots); Thrombi (several Blood Clots)
Description
Thrombosis involves the formation of a Blood Clot (Thrombus) in a Blood Vessel. The Thrombus (or Thrombi) that are implicit in Thrombosis can either grow and eventually cause total obstruction of the Blood Vessel in which it occurs; or break loose and travel through the bloodstream to another Blood Vessel until it reaches an area too narrow to pass, where it (they) may lodge and cause Embolism.
Prevalence
Thrombosis (and its consequences such as Heart Attack and Stroke) is the leading cause of disability and death in Western nations.
These Substances may Alleviate/Prevent Thrombosis
Alkaloids
Rynchophylline may help to prevent Thrombosis.
Carbohydrates
Chondroitin Sulfate may help to prevent Thrombosis (by inhibiting abnormal Blood Clotting). [1]
Heparin (usually administered via injection) is used for the treatment of Thrombosis.
Coumarins
3-n-Butyl-Phthalide may help to prevent Thrombosis. [2]
Enzymes
Dietary Proteolytic Enzymes - Dietary may help to break down the Fibrin that is implicated in the Blood Clots associated with Thrombosis (Proteolytic Enzymes facilitate the process of Fibrinolysis):
Brinase may alleviate Thrombosis (by dissolving abnormal Blood Clots). [3]
Bromelain may alleviate the symptoms (including Inflammation, Pain, Edema, tenderness and disability) in (the Thrombophlebitis form of) Thrombosis. [4]
Lumbrokinase may help to prevent and treat Thrombosis. [5]
Nattokinase may alleviate and prevent Thrombosis, including Deep-Vein Thrombosis (by dissolving abnormal Blood Clots). [6]
Supplemental Pancreatic Enzymes may help to break down the Fibrin that is implicated in the Blood Clots associated with Thrombosis (due to their constituent Proteolytic Enzymes facilitating the process of Fibrinolysis).
Lipids
Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) may help to prevent Thrombosis (by preventing abnormal Blood Clotting). [7]
Omega-3 Fatty Acids may help to prevent Thrombosis: [8]
Alpha-Linolenic Acid (LNA) may help to prevent Thrombosis (by lowering the body’s production of potentially toxic Thromboxanes that are often elevated in Thrombosis patients). [9]
Prescribed Medications
Anticoagulants - Pharmaceutical are often prescribed for the treatment of Thrombosis.
Polyphenols
Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins (OPCs) may reduce the risk of Thrombosis.
