Overview

Edema involves the abnormal infiltration of any of the body's tissues with fluid. Most edemas emerge because filtration overwhelms the lymph drainage system. The two main causes of swollen lower limbs are deep vein thrombosis and lymphedema (a failure of the lymph drainage system).
