Overview
Bilberry Vaccinium myrtillus, is a perennial shrub native to Northern Europe, North America and Canada. The berry, sometimes the leaf, is used for its therapeutic benefits.
Health Benefits of Bilberry
Most of the therapeutic benefits of Bilberries are due to their high content of Anthocyanidins (which are part of the molecular structure of the Anthocyanosides of Bilberry) and Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins (OPC).
Aging Process
Bilberries may retard the progression of the Aging Process (due to their powerful Antioxidant properties). [1]
Bilberries may possess Life Extension potential (due to the powerful Antioxidant properties of the Polyphenols content of Bilberries).
Cardiovascular System
Bilberry may help to prevent Atherosclerosis (by improving Blood Circulation and by increasing the strength of Blood Vessels). [2]
Bilberry may improve Blood Circulation (especially to the hands, feet, Eyes, Brain and Heart).
Bilberry (700 mg per day of standardized 25% Anthocyanosides Bilberry extract) may help to prevent abnormal Blood Clotting (due to Anthocyanosides and Proanthocyanidins in Bilberry reducing abnormal Platelet Aggregation). [3]
Bilberry may stabilize and reduce the permeability of Capillaries (due to the Anthocyanosides content of Bilberry). [4]
Bilberry may alleviate Hemorrhoids (due to Anthocyanosides in Bilberry that strengthen the Capillaries). [5]
Bilberry my help to prevent High Blood Pressure (due to the Anthocyanosides content of Bilberry). [6]
Bilberry may alleviate and prevent Microangiopermeability(due to the Anthocyanosides content of Bilberry). [7]
Bilberry (460 mg standardized to contain 25% (115 mg) Anthocyanosides administered orally for 180 days) may reduce the incidence of Nosebleeds caused by Microangiopermeability. [8]
Bilberry may improve the mobility of the Joints of the fingers of Raynaud's Disease patients. [9]
Bilberry may help to prevent (ischemic) Stroke without increasing the risk of hemorrhagic Stroke. [10]
Bilberry may alleviate Varicose Veins. [11]
Bilberry may cause a significant reduction in the symptoms (including Edema, Pain, Cramps and Paraesthesia) of Venous Insufficiency. [12]
Digestive System
Bilberry may alleviate Diarrhea. [13]
Bilberry may alleviate Dysentery. [14]
Bilberry may accelerate the healing of Peptic Ulcers and may help to prevent Ulcers - Peptic including Ulcers - Gastric (due to the Anthocyanosides of Bilberry strengthening the Blood Vessels that supply the Digestive Tract and possibly also by enhancing the defensive mechanisms of the Gastric Mucosa). [15]
Excretory System
Bilberry may help to prevent Urinary Tract Infections (by increasing urinary Hippuric Acid levels). [16]
Eyes/Vision
Bilberry may alleviate manyEyes - Ailments (by improving blood supply to the Eyes and by strengthening the Capillaries that surround they Eyes):
Bilberry (240 - 480 mg per day) may help to prevent Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) (due to the Anthocyanosides content of Bilberry). [17]
