Description

Peptic Ulcers are single or multiple open sores affecting the Mucous Membranes (including the Gastric Mucosa and Intestinal Mucosa) that are exposed to Gastric Juices within the Digestive Tract.  Peptic Ulcers are usually caused by failure of the Digestive Tract's Mucous Membranes to withstand the action of Pepsin and Hydrochloric Acid - this usually occurs when the Mucous Membranes become thinner, rather than as a result of Pepsin or Hydrochloric Acid.

Prevalence

Peptic Ulcers affect 1% to 20% of the population of developed countries of the world.
