Skin - Dry
Description
Dry Skin is a Skin condition characterized by lack of Water/Sebum in the Stratum Corneum layer of the Skin.
Prevalence
77% of people over the age of 64 experience Dry Skin.
These Substances may Alleviate or Prevent Dry Skin
Amino Acids
Arginine (applied topically) may alleviate Dry Skin (by functioning as a precursor for Urea production in the Skin). [1]
Carnitine (applied topically) may alleviate Dry Skin (by providing the Energy necessary for the formation of the Skin’s barrier function). [2]
Hydroxyproline (applied topically or consumed orally) may alleviate Dry Skin. [3]
Taurine may help to prevent Dry Skin. [4]
Tyrosine may alleviate Dry Skin - but only when the underlying cause of Dry Skin is Hypothyroidism.
Carbohydrates
Beta 1,3 Glucan (applied topically) may alleviate Dry Skin (by improving Skin hydration). [5]
Glycosaminoglycans help to retain Water in the Skin and thereby help to prevent Dry Skin:
Glucosamine may alleviate Dry Skin (due to its role as a precursor for Hyaluronic Acid production). [6]
Hyaluronic Acid (applied topically) may alleviate Dry Skin. [7]
Proteoglycans help to retain Water in the Skin and thereby help to prevent Dry Skin.
Carotenoids
Astaxanthin (orally) may alleviate Dry Skin. [8]
Cosmeceuticals
Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) (applied topically) may alleviate Dry Skin (by facilitating the desquamation of dead Skin cells from the Stratum Corneum) - i.e. Alpha-Hydroxy Acids facilitate the exfoliation of dry, flaky, dead Skin Cells that accumulate on the surface of the Skin: [9]
Glycolic Acid (applied topically) may alleviate Dry Skin. [10]
Lactic Acid (applied topically) may alleviate Dry Skin. [11]
Kinetin (applied topically) may alleviate Dry Skin. [12]
Na-PCA is the principal natural moisturizer found in human Skin - topically applied exogenous Na-PCA may effectively moisturize the Skin, thereby alleviating Dry Skin. [13]
Petroleum Jelly (applied topically) may temporarily alleviate Dry Skin: [14]
Clinical studies have shown that Petroleum Jelly moisturizes the skin as effectively as many more expensive moisturizers.
Poly-Hydroxy Acids (PHAs) (applied topically) may alleviate Dry Skin:
Gluconolactone (applied topically) may alleviate Dry Skin. [15]
Lactobionic Acid (applied topically) may alleviate Dry Skin. [16]
Exogenous, supplemental Urea (applied topically via products such as Ureacin) may alleviate Dry Skin - it improves the Water binding capability of the Skin by opening the layers of the Epidermis and Dermis for Hydrogen bonding which then attracts moisture to the Cells of the Skin. Urea also tends to solubilize Keratin within the Stratum Corneum. [17]
Enzymes
Papain (applied topically) may reduce the scaling associated with Dry Skin. [18]
