Leukemia
Also known as: Leukaemia; Leukocytic Sarcoma
Description
Leukemia is a form of Cancer that occurs in White Blood Cells resulting in an uncontrolled increase of immature White Blood Cells in body organs and in the blood itself. It involves the progressive proliferation of abnormal White Blood Cells.
Prevalence
Leukemia is the ninth most common type of Cancer to affect men but occurs less frequently in women.
These Substances may Treat or Prevent Leukemia
Amino Acids
N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) may reduce the toxic side-effects associated with Chemotherapy and Radiation Therapy in (acute lymphoblastic) Leukemia patients. [1]
Auxins
Indole-3-Carbinol may help to prevent Leukemia. [2]
Carbohydrates
Beta 1,3 Glucan (when used in conjunction with Chemotherapy or Radiation Therapy) may help to cure Leukemia. [3]
Kureha may prolong the survival time and duration of remission in Leukemia patients. [4]
Carotenoids
Lycopene may inhibit the further spread of some types of Leukemia (by helping Leukemia cells to convert back to normal non-cancerous cells). [5]
Enzymes
Asparaginase may inhibit the further development of (the Acute Lymphoblastic form of) Leukemia (ALL) - it exerts its effects by depleting Asparagine from Leukemic Blood Cells. [6]
Hormones
Thymosin may improve the function of the Immune System in Leukemia patients. [7]
Hydrazines
Hydrazine Sulfate may inhibit the growth of Leukemia cells. [8]
Lignans
Matairesinol may inhibit the further growth of the Cancer cells involved in (the Acute Promyelocytic form of) Leukemia. [9]
Lipids
10-Hydroxydecenoic Acid (an Unsaturated Fatty Acid specific to Royal Jelly) may prevent and treat Leukemia.
Alkylglycerols may be beneficial for the treatment of Leukemia. [10]
Beta-Sitosterol may exert anti-tumor activity against (Lymphocytic forms of) Leukemia. [11]
Betulinic Acid may stimulate the apoptosis (cell death) of Leukemia cells. [12]
Boswellic Acid may stimulate the differentiation of Leukemia cells back to normal and may also stimulate the apoptosis (cell death) of Leukemia cells. [13]
Bryostatins may inhibit the growth of Leukemia cells and may cause some types of Leukemia cells to mature into Macrophages. [14]
Butyric Acid may cause Leukemia cells to differentiate back to normal cells. [15]
Carnosol may stimulate the apoptosis (cell death) of (Acute Lymphoblastic) Leukemia cells. [16]
Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) may inhibit the growth of Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia cells and may stimulate their apoptosis (cell death). [17]
Limonene may help to prevent and treat Leukemia. [18]
Resveratrol may inhibit the further progression of (the Acute Promyelocytic form of) Leukemia (it may cause Leukemia cells to differentiate back to normal cells) and may stimulate the destruction (apoptosis) of some forms of Leukemia. [19]
Minerals
Germanium may be effective for the treatment of some forms of Leukemia. [20]
Potassium may be a useful adjunct for the treatment of Leukemia.
Selenium may help to prevent and treat Leukemia. [21]
Zinc may be useful for the treatment of (Acute Lymhocytic) Leukemia. [22]
Peptides
Antineoplastons (specifically Antineoplaston AS2-1) may promote the maturation (and destruction) of Leukemia Cells. [23]
Prescribed Medications
Aspirin may help to prevent Leukemia. [24]
BCG Vaccine may help to prevent Leukemia: [25]
Children who have been inoculated against Tuberculosis with BCG have only 50% of the risk of Leukemia as non-BCG inoculated children.
Lovastatin may stimulate the Apoptosis (cell death) of (acute myeloblastic) Leukemia cells. [26]
Methotrexate (administered intravenously in high doses) is commonly utilized for the treatment of Leukemia.
Prednisone (synthetic, pharmaceutical Cortisol) is often prescribed for the treatment of Leukemia:
Caution: Prednisone has various undesirable side effects.
Vitamin D Analogs may be capable of normalizing some cases of malignant Leukemia.
Polyphenols
Apigenin may stimulate the Apoptosis (cellular death) of Leukemia cells and may stimulate the differentiation of Leukemia cells back to normal cells. [27]
Chrysin may stimulate the apoptosis of Leukemia cells. [28]
Curcumin may be beneficial for some types of Leukemia: [29]
Curcumin may stimulate the apoptosis (death) of Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) cells.
Curcumin may cause Apoptosis (death) of the Cancer Cells involved in the Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia form of Leukemia.
Cyanidin may stimulate the apoptosis (cell death) of Leukemia cells. [30]
Ellagic Acid may facilitate the apoptosis (cell death) of Leukemia cells. [31]
