Fish Oils
Overview
Fish Oils are a group of dietary Oils derived from (usually the Livers of) Fish.
Fish Oils may Enhance the Function of these Substances
Enzymes
Fish Oils may enhance the function/activity of Catalase. [1]
Fish Oils may enhance the function/activity of Glutathione Peroxidase. [2]
Fish Oils may increase Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) levels and SOD activity especially within the Heart. [3]
Hormones
Fish Oils may increase plasma Adiponectin levels. [4]
Lipids
Fish Oils may increase serum Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) levels for up to seven weeks after discontinuation of Fish Oils consumption. [5]
Fish Oils may increase serum Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) levels for up to three weeks after discontinuation of Fish Oils consumption. [6]
Fish Oils may enhance the production of Prostaglandin I2. [7]
Prescribed Medications
Fish Oils may increase the effectiveness of HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors (Statins). Fish Oils may produce greater reductions in LDL Cholesterol than HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors alone. [8] Drugs from this class include:
Atorvastatin (Lipitor)
Cerivastatin (Baycor)
Fluvastatin (Lescol)
Lovastatin [9]
Mevinolin
Pravastatin (Pravachol) [10]
Simvastatin (Lipex; Simvastin; Zocor)
Fish Oils may sensitize Cancer cells to the effects of Mitomycin C (due to the Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) content of Fish Oils). [11]
Proteins
Fish Oils may increase the body’s production/activity of Uncoupling Protein 3 (due to the Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) content of Fish Oils). [12]
Fish Oils may Counteract these Potentially Toxic Substances
Cytokines
Fish Oils may inhibit the excessive production of Interleukin 1 (IL-1-beta form) by inhibiting the activity of Nuclear Factor-Kappa B. [13]
Fish Oils may inhibit the production of excessive amounts of Interleukin 6. [14]
Fish Oils may lower Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF-alpha form) levels by inhibiting the activity of Nuclear Factor-Kappa B. [15]
Environmental Toxins
Fish Oils may counteract the toxic effects of Air Pollution. [16]
Enzymes
Fish Oils may reduce Creatine Phosphokinase (CPK) levels in persons who undertake intensive exercise. [17]
Hormones
Fish Oils may inhibit the ability of (mental) stress to increase Cortisol levels. [18]
Lipids
Fish Oils may lower the body’s production of Arachidonic Acid. [19]
Fish Oils may lower the body’s production of Leukotriene B4. [20]
