Overview

Nuclear Factor-Kappa B (NF-κB) is a critical protein complex that functions as a transcription factor. It plays a vital role in regulating the immune response, inflammation, and cellular growth. First discovered in 1986, NF-κB is a fascinating protein complex found in almost all animal cell types, and it is crucial for maintaining normal cellular processes and responding to stressors.
NF-κB, a critical protein complex, remains inactive in cells' cytoplasm by binding to inhibitory proteins called IκBs. A series of events is triggered when a cell encounters stimuli such as infection, stress, or inflammatory signals. This leads to the degradation of IκBs, which in turn allows NF-κB to translocate into the nucleus. Once in the nucleus, it binds to specific DNA sequences to activate the transcription of genes involved in immune and inflammatory responses, cell survival, and proliferation.
Due to its pivotal role in controlling immune and inflammatory pathways, NF-κB has been implicated in various diseases, including autoimmune disorders, chronic inflammation, and cancer. Overactivation of NF-κB can lead to excessive inflammatory responses, while inadequate activation can impair immune function.

 

Toxic Effects of NF-Kappa B

Aging Process

 NF-Kappa B may contribute to the Aging Process (including Skin Aging):  [1]

 NF-Kappa B may initiate the degradation of the Collagen and Elastin content of the Skin that occurs during the progression of the Aging Process (it “switches on” the Genes for the enzyme that degrades Collagen and Elastin).

 NF-Kappa B activation is involved in the initiation and progression of Pancreatic Cancer.

 NF-Kappa B may exert a negative effect on the Immune System.
