Description

This section outlines the potentially toxic substances that Vitamin C is known to counteract or minimize.

Vitamin C may Inhibit these Potentially Toxic Substances

Alcohols

Vitamin C may accelerate the conversion of Methanol to Formaldehyde and may reduce body movement abnormalities caused by Methanol.  [1]

Aldehydes

Vitamin C may counteract the toxic effects of Acetaldehyde and (when combined with Vitamin B1 and Cysteine) Vitamin C may help to break down Acetaldehyde within the body.  [2]

Vitamin C may inhibit the ability of Acrolein to damage the body’s Cells.  [3]

Vitamin C may accelerate the conversion of Methanol to Formaldehyde and may reduce the toxic effects of Formaldehyde.  [4]

Alkaloids

Vitamin C (megadoses) may help to prevent death from Strychnine poisoning.  [5]

Amino Acids

Vitamin C may protect against the neurotoxic effects of excessive Glutamic Acid.  [6]

Vitamin C may inhibit the ability of Homocysteine to cause Memory impairment and may counteract the negative cardiovascular effects of Homocysteine.  [7]

Vitamin C may reduce the toxicity of L-Dopa.  [8]

Vitamin C may protect against the neurotoxic effects of N-Methyl-D-Aspartate (NMDA).  [9]

Animal Venoms

Vitamin C (megadose therapy ideally administered intravenously, but possibly also orally) may help to prevent death in some types of Snake Bites.  [10]

Carbohydrates

Vitamin C may lower elevated Sorbitol levels in Diabetes Mellitus patients.  [11]

Electromagnetic Radiation

Vitamin C may improve the ability of the body to resist the toxic effects of exposure to Radioactivity:  [12]

In one study, Guinea pigs that were supplemented with large dosages of Vitamin C combined with Bioflavonoids were able to withstand twice the known lethal dosages of Radioactivity.  Ten grams of Vitamin C per day may decrease the bleeding and cell degeneration that occurs as a result of exposure to Plutonium Radioactivity.

Vitamin C may inhibit the ability of Gamma-Rays to damage Chromosomes and cause Cell mutations.  [13]

Vitamin C may counteract the toxicity of Microwaves (by exerting Antioxidant effects that counteract the Free Radicals generated by Microwaves).  [14]

Vitamin C (especially when applied topically) may counteract (via its Antioxidant properties) the generation of Free Radicals in the Skin and Photoaging caused by excessive exposure to Ultra-Violet Radiation (both UV-A and UV-B Ultra-Violet Radiation).  [15]

Environmental Toxins

Vitamin C may protect the Liver from the toxic effects of exposure to Carbon Tetrachloride.  [16]

Vitamin C may help to detoxify Cyanide.  [17]

Vitamin C may help to detoxify several types of Pesticides and may inhibit the ability of Pesticides to damage Cells.  [18]

Vitamin C may inhibit the conversion of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) to carcinogens:  [19]

Vitamin C may inhibit the conversion of Benzpyrene to carcinogens.  [20]

Enzymes

Vitamin C may inhibit Acetylcholinesterase activity in the Brain.  [21]

Vitamin C may inhibit the activity of Aldose Reductase.  [22]

Vitamin C may inhibit the activity of HMG-CoA Reductase.  [23]

Vitamin C may inhibit the activity of Ornithine Decarboxylase.  [24]

Food Additives

Vitamin C may counteract the toxicity of Monosodium Glutamate.  [25]

Vitamin C may inhibit the conversion of Nitrites and Nitrates to (carcinogenic) Nitrosamines within the Stomach and may inhibit the ability of Nitrates and Nitrites to damage the Liver.  [26]
