Asthma - Substances that Prevent/Treat
These Substances may Prevent/Treat Asthma
Alkaloids
Allantoin may be useful for the treatment of Asthma. [1]
Caffeine may dilate the Bronchial Tubes making it easier for asthmatics to breathe. [2]
Ephedrine may alleviate the constriction and congestion associated with Asthma. [3]
Amino Acids
Arginine may be useful for the treatment of Asthma (due to its role in the production of Nitric Oxide). [4]
Carnitine may be useful for the treatment of Asthma. [5]
Cysteine may alleviate the symptoms of Asthma:
N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) (administered orally or via aerosol inhalation spray) may be useful for the treatment of Asthma. [6]
Taurine may be useful for the treatment of Asthma. [7]
Asthma patients often have a defect in their metabolism of Tryptophan resulting in reduced platelet transportation of Tryptophan (possibly as a result of Vitamin B6 deficiency).
Carbohydrates
Asthma patients have reduced airway passage Smooth Muscle Hyaluronic Acid production. [8]
Carotenoids
Alpha-Carotene may help to prevent Asthma. [9]
Astaxanthin may be useful for the treatment of Asthma. [10]
Lycopene (30 mg per day) may help to prevent Asthma including Exercise-induced Asthma. [11]
Complementary Therapies
Ozone therapy may be useful for the treatment of Asthma: [12]
Caution: excessive environmental exposure to Ozone may cause Asthma.
Enzymes
Bromelain may be useful for the treatment of Asthma. [13]
Hormones
Asthma patients often have abnormally low DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone) levels and DHEA inhibits constriction of the air passages that leads to Asthma attacks. [14]
Most Asthma patients have low serum Melatonin levels. [15]
Immune System Chemicals
Interferon Gamma may help to prevent Asthma (insufficient production of Interferon Gamma is associated with increased incidence and severity of Asthma). [16]
Lipids
Beta-Sitosterol (especially when used in conjunction with Sterolins such as Beta-Sitosterol Glycoside) may help to control Asthma (by stimulating the proliferation of TH1 Helper T-Cells and deactivating TH2 Helper T-Cells). [17]
Beta-Sitosterol Glycoside (especially when used in conjunction with Phytosterols such as Beta-Sitosterol) may help to control Asthma (by stimulating the proliferation of TH1 Helper T-Cells and deactivating TH2 Helper T-Cells). [18]
Forskolin (a Diterpene present in Coleus) may be an effective therapy for the treatment of Asthma (due to its ability to stimulate the production of intracellular Cyclic AMP in Asthma patients - impaired Cyclic AMP production is believed to be one of the underlying causes of Asthma; also, Forskolin may possess bronchodilatory properties).
