Description

Muscular Dystrophy is a Muscle disease characterized by progressive Muscle Weakness and degeneration/death of Muscle Fibers but without evidence of Nerve degeneration.  It involves an abnormality in Muscle structure and abnormal Muscle regeneration.

These Substances may Alleviate Muscular Dystrophy

Amino Acids

Carnitine may be a beneficial supplement for Muscular Dystrophy patients as Muscular Dystrophy patients have accelerated excretion of Carnitine via their urine:  [1]

Muscular Dystrophy patients usually have lowered levels of Carnitine in their Skeletal Muscle.

(Duchenne) Muscular Dystrophy patients often have low levels of Carnosine (indicating that supplemental Carnosine may be useful for the treatment of this form of Muscular Dystrophy).  [2]

Muscular Dystrophy patients often excrete excessive amounts of Creatine (a condition known as Creatinuria) in their Urine - this indicates that supplemental Creatine may alleviate Muscular Dystrophy:  [3]

Creatine Monohydrate may increase Muscle Strength and may increase Muscle mass in Muscular Dystrophy patients.  [4]

Glutamic Acid may help to alleviate Muscular Dystrophy.

Glutamine may retard the rate of Muscle breakdown in (the Duchenne form of) Muscular Dystrophy.  [5]

Glycine may alleviate Muscular Dystrophy (probably due to its incorporation into Creatine).

Hormones

Melatonin may reduce the muscle degenerative process in (Duchenne) Muscular Dystrophy patients.  [6]
