Gingivitis
Overview
Gingivitis involves Inflammation of the Gums as a response to Plaque on adjacent Teeth. It is characterized by redness, bleeding, Edema and fibrous enlargement of the Gums.
Prevalence
Approximately 50% of the adult (aged 30 or over) population of Western countries are afflicted with Gingivitis.
These Substances may Alleviate Gingivitis
Alkaloids
Berberine (applied topically to the Gums) may inhibit the Detrimental Bacteria that cause Gingivitis. [1]
Carbohydrates
Hyaluronic Acid (applied topically) may be useful for the treatment of Gingivitis. [2]
Carotenoids
Lycopene may be useful for the treatment of Gingivitis. [3]
Cosmeceuticals/Toiletries
Some commercial Mouthwashes may counteract Gingivitis:
Cineol, Thymol and Chlorhexidine-containing Mouthwashes may counteract the Bacteria that cause Gingivitis.
Lipids – Monoterpenes
Cineol (used orally as a constituent of Mouthwashes) may help to prevent and treat Gingivitis. [4]
Thymol (used orally as a constituent of Mouthwashes) may help to prevent and treat Gingivitis. [5]
Minerals
Calcium Sodium Phosphosilicate (applied topically via Toothpaste) may alleviate Gingivitis. [6]
Silver (used as a mouthwash) may alleviate Gingivitis (by destroying the Detrimental Bacteria that cause Gingivitis). [7]
Zinc (preferably used as a constituent of Mouthwash or alternatively (and probably less effectively) oral supplementation) may decrease the permeability of Gingival Tissue to Antigens (which could help to provide resistance against the onset of Gingivitis). [8]
Quinones
Coenzyme Q10 (50 - 75 mg per day) may halt the progression of Gingivitis and (in many cases) may totally heal the damage already done in some cases: [9]
Coenzyme Q10 may eliminate Gingivitis in under five days in many Gingivitis patients.
Prescribed Medications
Metronidazole inhibits/kills the Detrimental Bacteria that cause acute ulcerative Gingivitis.
Polyphenols
Pycnogenol (as a constituent of chewing gum) may reduce the Bleeding of the Gums that occurs during Gingivitis. [10]
Sulfuric Compounds
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) (as a constituent of Mouthwash or Toothpaste) may alleviate Gingivitis. [11]
Vitamins
Folic Acid (4 mg per day orally or as a constituent of mouthwashes or toothpastes) may help to prevent and treat Gingivitis (by increasing the Gums’ resistance to Detrimental Bacteria and by reducing Inflammation of the Gums. [12]
Gingivitis may occur as a result of Vitamin A deficiency. [13]
Gingivitis may occur as a result of Vitamin C deficiency. [14]
Vitamin D may help to prevent Gingivitis. [15]
These Foods/Herbs may Alleviate or Prevent Gingivitis
Bee Products
Honey (Manuka honey only) (chewed or sucked in the form of a hardened Manuka Honey product) may alleviate Gingivitis. [16]
Propolis (liquid form combined with water and consumed internally or as an ingredient in Toothpastes or Mouthwashes) may alleviate Gingivitis (by inhibiting many of the Detrimental Bacteria that cause Gingivitis). [17]
