These Substances may Prevent/Alleviate Diabetes Mellitus

Amino Acids

Alpha-Ketoglutarate (Pyridoxine Alpha-Ketoglutarate (PAK) form - 1,800 mg per day) may enhance the therapeutic effectiveness of Insulin and Phenformin in Diabetes Mellitus patients - both Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 and Diabetes Mellitus Type 2.  [1]

Carnitine may help to prevent Diabetes Mellitus, lowers elevated Triglycerides and Cholesterol in Diabetes Mellitus patients and may help to alleviate the Pain associated with (diabetic) Neuropathy in Diabetes Mellitus patients.  [2]

N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) may help to prevent (diabetic) Neuropathy in Diabetes Mellitus patients.  [3]

Carbohydrates

Arabinoxylans (10,000 mg per day) may improve Blood Sugar control in Diabetes Mellitus patients.  [4]

Cellulose may help to lower Blood Sugar levels in Diabetes Mellitus patients.

Glucomannan may help to lower Blood Sugar levels in Diabetes Mellitus patients.  [5]

Gums may help to lower Blood Sugar levels in Diabetes Mellitus patients:

Guar Gum may help to normalize Blood Sugar levels in Diabetes Mellitus patients.

Inulin may help to lower elevated Blood Sugar levels in Diabetes Mellitus patients.  [6]

 Lignin may alleviate Diabetes Mellitus.

Enzymes

Diabetes Mellitus patients are often found to have abnormally low Glucokinase activity.

Hormones

Supplemental DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone) may lower the requirement for exogenous Insulin in Diabetes Mellitus patients.  [7]

Melatonin may help to prevent Diabetic Nephropathy in DiabetesMellitus patients.  [8]

Immune System Chemicals

Diabetes Mellitus patients are often found to produce insufficient quantities of Interferon Alpha.

Lipids

Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) may help to lower elevated Blood Sugar levels (which is particularly beneficial for Diabetes Mellitus patients).  [9]

Gamma-Linolenic Acid (480 mg per day) may alleviate the symptoms of (diabetic) Neuropathy:  [10]

Diabetes Mellitus patients have an impairment in their ability to convert Linoleic Acid to Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA) - this occurs because Diabetes Mellitus patients are unable to manufacture the Delta-6 Desaturase Enzyme which normally converts dietary Linoleic Acid to GLA.  [11]

Series 1 Prostaglandins may alleviate Diabetes Mellitus (by improving the effectiveness of Insulin):

Diabetes Mellitus patients are often found to have sub-optimal production of Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1).  [12]

Minerals

Calcium AEP may reduce the requirement for exogenous Insulin in Diabetes Mellitus patients, may counteract the Autoimmune abnormality that is associated with Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 and may help to normalize Blood Sugar levels in Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 patients.  [13]

Diabetes Mellitus may occur as a result of Chromium deficiency and supplemental Chromium exerts numerous beneficial effects on Diabetes Mellitus patients:

Chromium may lower elevated serum Triglycerides levels in Diabetes Mellitus patients.

Copper deficiency may cause Glucose intolerance (which is implicit in DiabetesMellitus).  Many Diabetes Mellitus patients are found to be deficient in Copper.  [14]

Magnesium may help to prevent Diabetes Mellitus and to keep Diabetes Mellitus under control (most Diabetes Mellitus patients are found to be deficient in Magnesium).  [15]

Manganese (5 - 15 mg per day) may be beneficial for the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus (due to its ability to activate the enzymes involved in the process of glycolysis) and Diabetes Mellitus patients are often found to have approximately 50% of the levels of Manganese of normal, healthy persons.  [16]

Potassium may alleviate Diabetes Mellitus (by facilitating the conversion of Glucose to Glycogen).

Selenium may help to lower elevated Blood Sugar levels in DiabetesMellitus patients.  [17]

Zinc may counteract the inability of Diabetes Mellitus patients to absorb Zinc and their tendency to excrete excessive quantities of Zinc.  It may also improve/regulate Insulin function in Diabetes Mellitus patients:  [18]

Zinc may be useful for the treatment of diabetic Neuropathy.  [19]

Neurotransmitters

Supplemental Gamma Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) may lower elevated Blood Sugar levels in Diabetes Mellitus patients and may therefore minimize the complications associated with Diabetes Mellitus.  [20]

Peptides

Glutathione may help to prevent some of the complications associated with Diabetes Mellitus (including (diabetic) Nephropathy and (diabetic) Neuropathy (due to the Antioxidant effects of Glutathione).  [21]

Prescribed Medications

Anti-Diabetic Prescribed Medications are employed by conventional medicine to treat Diabetes Mellitus:

Exogenous, pharmaceutical Insulin is administered in the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus.
