Tinea

Also known as:  Dermaphytoses;  Ringworm

Tinea is a highly infectious Fungal Disease, characterized by itching, red, scaly Skin on the afflicted areas, caused by various Detrimental Fungi.  Tinea will not heal without intervention.

 The Tinea pedis (Athletes Foot) form of Tinea affects approximately 10% of the population of Western nations at any given time and affects approximately 75% of the populaton of Western nations at some stage of their lives.

 Men aged 25 - 54 have a higher incidence of Tinea pedis than the rest of the population.

Alcohols

 Propylene Glycol (applied topically) may kill the Pityrosporum orbiculare Fungus that causes Tinea Versicolor. 

Carbohydrates

 Lentinan (cream applied topically) may alleviate Tinea. 

Lipids

 Undecylenic Acid (applied topically) may kill/inhibit the Detrimental Fungi that cause Tinea.  ^[1]

Microorganisms

 Lactobacillus acidophilus (applied topically) may counteract the Detrimental Fungi that cause Tinea. 

Minerals

 Clinoptilolite is claimed to alleviate Tinea.  ^[2]

 Iodine (tincture applied topically) may alleviate Tinea.  ^[3]

 Selenium (lotion applied topically) may alleviate the Tinea versicolor form of Tinea.  ^[4]

 Silver (applied topically) may cure Tinea.  ^[5]

 Zinc (Zinc Pyrithione shampoo applied topically) may alleviate Tinea versicolor.  ^[6]

Nitrogenous Compounds

 Urea (applied topically) may alleviate some types of Tinea.  ^[7]

Prescribed Medications

 Griseofulvin (administered orally) is commonly prescribed to kill Tinea infections caused by Dermatophytes.

 Imidazoles (applied topically as a cream) are commonly prescribed to treat various forms of Tinea:

 Once or twice a day topical application of Imidazoles usually clears superficial Tinea infections within two to three weeks.

 Itraconazole alleviates Tinea.

 Ketoconazole (cream applied topically or Nizoral Shampoo applied to the afflicted area) alleviates the Tinea versicolor and Tinea capitis forms of Tinea.  ^[8]

 Miconazole Nitrate (applied topically in the form of a 2% cream) can cure many cases of Tinea (i.e. those cases of Tinea caused by Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum and Pityrosporum obriculare).

            The specific forms of Tinea affected by Miconazole Nitrate include those cases of Tinea corporis, Tinea cruris, Tinea pedis and Tinea unguium caused by the Dermatophytes against which Miconazole Nitrate is effective).
