Retina
Description
The Retina is the light-sensitive layer that lines the interior of the Eyeball.
Biological Function of the Retina
Nervous System
Melatonin is manufactured within the Retina.
The Retina is involved in the Sense of Sight - the inner part of the Retina, next to the cavity of the Eyeball, contains light-sensitive cells (Rods and Cones) and their associated Nerve Fibers:
The Retina has connections to the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN) of the Hypothalamus in the Brain.
These Substances may Enhance the Health of the Retina
Amino Acids
Taurine may enhance the function of the Rods and Cones of the Retina of the Eyes and Taurine deficiency may cause degeneration of the Retina. [1]
Carotenoids
Lutein concentrates in the Retina where it functions as an Antioxidant against Oxygen Free Radicals generated by Light and Sunlight and protects the Photoreceptor Cells of the Retina. [2]
Zeaxanthin concentrates in the Retina: [3]
Zeaxanthin may protect the Retina of the Eye from the toxic effects of exposure of the Retina to Sunlight.
Enzymes
Glutathione Peroxidase concentrates (in high quantities) in the Retina. [4]
Hormones
Melatonin may protect the Photoreceptors (Rods and Cones) of the Retina from death (apoptosis). [5]
Pregnenolone concentrates in and is produced in the Retina. [6]
Lipids
Gamma Oryzanol may inhibit the toxic effects of Lipid Peroxidation (caused by Peroxidized Fats) in the Retina. [7]
