B-Lymphocytes
Overview
B-Lymphocytes (B-Cells) are a type of Lymphocyte, Agranulocyte, White Blood Cell which is manufactured in and matures in Lymphoid Tissue in the Bone Marrow.
Biological Functions of B-Lymphocytes
Immune System
Mature B-Lymphocytes are stored in the Adenoids, Lymph Nodes and Tonsils for years in readiness to attack Antigens.
B-Lymphocytes are activated by Macrophages and are also under the constant surveillance of Helper T-Cells (CD4 Cells) that stimulate the conversion of B-Lymphocytes to Plasma Cells.
B-Lymphocytes are precursors for the production of Plasma Cells that eventually produce Antibodies under instructions from T-Lymphocytes in response to Antigens:
- ImmunoglobulinIgE (an Antibody) is produced by B-Lymphocytes in response to Antigens (including Allergens).
These Substances may Enhance the Production/Function of B-Lymphocytes
Antioxidants
Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) may improve the function of B-Lymphocytes.
Carbohydrates
Ginsan (a constituent of Korean Ginseng) may activate B-Lymphocytes. [1]
Kureha (a constituent of Karawatake Mushrooms) may enhance the proliferation of B-Lymphocytes. [2]
MGN-3 may enhance the function of B-Lymphocytes.
Carotenoids
Beta-Carotene may improve the function of B-Lymphocytes. [3]
Cytokines
Interleukin 1 (IL-1) stimulates the growth and differentiation of B-Lymphocytes.
Interleukin 2 (IL-2) stimulates the proliferation of activated B-Lymphocytes.
Interleukin 4 (IL-4)stimulates the differentiation of B-Lymphocytes.
IL-4 stimulates B-Lymphocytes to activate an immune response to various Antigens.Interleukin 5 (IL-5) stimulates the activation of B-Lymphocytes.
