Lymph Nodes
Also known as: Lymph Glands
Description
The Lymph Nodes are round, encapsulated structures that are spread throughout the Lymphatic System in Lymph Vessels. They are composed of primarily Lymphoid Tissue (composed of B-Lymphocytes and T-Lymphocytes) and secondarily of Plasma Cells.
Biological Functions of the Lymph Nodes
Immune System
The Lymphoid Tissue in Lymph Nodes prevents Antigens from entering the Blood stream (due to B-Lymphocytes stored in Lymphoid Tissue of Lymph Nodes).
Lymph flows through Lymph Nodes where the cells of the Lymphoid Tissue function as Phagocytes, ingesting (phagocytizing) Antigens.
